Euro rocket to launch Thailand's Shin satellite into orbit

PARIS (AFX) - An Ariane 5 rocket will loft a 6.5-metric ton communications satellite operated by Thailand's Shin Satellite Plc, the heaviest ever launched, into geostationary transfer orbit early on Thursday, the Arianespace company said.

The Thaicom-4 will be the fourth launched by Arianespace for Shin Satellite, formerly Shinawatra Satellite.

Built by Space Systems/Loral in California, the satellite is designed to provide Internet access and multimedia services for the entire Asia-Pacific region for a period of at least 12 years, Agence France-Presse reported.

It will be placed in geostationary orbit above Indonesia.

Originally scheduled for July 12, the flight was postponed for technical reasons.

And who's paying for it :o
