An acquaintance of mine aged 40 died a few nights back, his wife's face-books page has a lot of condolences but no one says how he passed but appears to be sudden and terrible. He drank in soi cowboy occasionally, Nothing in the news, the incident could be related through timing but just purely speculating..

I was in Soi Cowboy once and some big and mean looking Thai bouncers plus a Mamasan came chasing after me accusing me of not paying a checkbin for a go-go I had not even set foot in. I did not see any easy way to explain that to them so I just paid up to get them out of my face.

It stops being LOS really quick if they think you have stiffed them of some Baht.

A good Thai friend of mine was drinking in Soi Cowboy with his girlfriend (now wife) to show her the sights; another side of Thailand and that not all of Thailand was the perfect world that she has grown up to believe.

Knowing of these areas my friend paid for each beer as it arrived. After 3 or 4 beers each and upon leaving the bar he was presented with a bill for the 3 or 4 beers his girlfriend and he had consumed.

After arguing his case he was threatened with the Police. When the Police officer arrived my friend was faced with the awkward situation of having to return the threats of the policeman - after-all, my friend himself is a policeman and of a substantially more significant position than the chappy attempting to extort him (along with the bar) - apologies, misunderstanding, new bar staff etc etc....

Having drank in cowboy on occasions before I have felt little or no threat, however my friends story has shown that a headache is a moment away for anyone...

Could issues arise anywhere ? of course, but.... issues are more likely in those areas where as my friend describes it, the scum of Thailand waits in prey...

Had the same issue been experienced by someone else other than he who has the capacity to cover them self then I wonder how the situation may develop.

Careful out there.....

Land of Scams (LOS) and Lack of Sanctions (LOS) will remain indefinitely, or until the country stops benefiting from wide spread corruption and sex tourism.

Move to China, far better than Thailand , lot less problems with visa, if you do not leave China for 3 years you get treated as chinese, and obtain long term visa. If you marry a Chinese girl you get a life time visa, no problems with money in the bank. The women are far more beautiful than Thai's. China is a beautiful country.

You forgot to add that China is controlled by a murderous regime that would think nothing of mudering thousands to maintain their undemocratic grip on the country. Now why don't you foxtrot off to a China related forum. ;)

To me the biggest risk to your health on Soi Cowboy is drinking spirits which have been tampered with or replaced by cheap rubbish.

Knock back too much of this stuff and I can guarantee a very nasty hangover. Stick to beers there is my advice.

Other than that show people a wee bit of respect and keep your wits about ya and should be fine!

Most bars in Cowboy & Nana don't run a tab.

Your chit comes in a cup. Pay immediately & make sure your cup stays empty.

Someone like Andrew Drummond, Stickman or Dave the Rave will comment if there is any truth to the rumor of a beating & death.

I guess khun Spiky Hair would have to perform the autopsy.

If you wear a Red Shirt then you are describing the current Thai Regime!! Ok only hundreds not thousands.

Just remind me when was Khun Mark elected?

Back on topic Soi Cowboy, just like anywhere in Thailand, requires you to keep your wits about you. Get sh*tfaced and insult a Thai and you are asking for trouble. That said I sincerely hope the "alleged" report of a death is just that,

Reminder ... Khun Mark was elected as an MP in 2007, and PM in 2008 after K Somchai (who was also elected PM in 2008) was banned.

And back on topic, Soi Cowboy, just like anywhere in the world, requires you to keep your wits about you, maybe a bit more than some places though.

@Powderpuff - every bar I go into in Cowboy, runs a tab - but I don't go into all of them. It's usually a wooden 'cup' with a piece of paper for each drink you get (or updated each time you get a drink). Every time a piece of paper goes into my 'cup', I check it.

The woman who some of us consider to be a publicity hound that had never met a microphone she'd didn't love has kept a low profile since the bomb detector fiasco deflated her ego. I do not think she will make an appearance unless the event has the potential to rehabilitate her shredded reputation.

I just do not understand why anyone with a bit of experience or street savvy would bother with the crass commercialism of soi cowboy. All farangs are just customers to exploit. It seems to me that it is very easy to end up as a collateral casualty in a place like that. I lasted 20 minutes walking along the soi, until we passed the 2nd loud argument featuring tossed beer bottles. That's when my Thai friend who is a tough character said, ok, enough, we go, this place is bad. I'm not calling your father when you are in the hospital. If a guy who works as a bouncer at a club in Patong says this to me, I listen. Mind you, he is also scared of spiders and his girlfriend is the one that has to get rid of them.

Actually Khun Abhisit was elected as an MP in 1991 at the age of 27 and is currently the MP who was the youngest MP ever elected and also the youngest MP to be elected as PM.

Khun Thaksin Shinawatra was only elected to be an MP in 1994.
