Nothing beats converting CASH or a TT at the exchanges... In particular SK Money Exchange gives amazingly great rates far better than the Banks in CMai.... In BKK I would go for SUPER RICH... which has a website that gives you the best rates out there. Pretty much on par with SK Money Changer. They seem to get less than 1% between buys and sells. Whereas the banks get approx 4-5%.

Banks in your homeland get 10-20% and are a rip OFF. I am amazed to see people converting money at the airport- u might as well throw thousands of baht down the toilet.

I like to take in 10K cash every 6 or so months. Never been a problem. TT get a good rate at the bank yet you pay 1.1% when you get it in your homeland. Naturally make out the TT in your currency. It is strange to see people convert a TT to baht in their homeland- throw 10s of 1000s down the toilet.

AEON is the only one that does not charge the 150bt fee and its exchange is very much similar to BKK Bank. Once again you lose out by 1000s of baht on any sort of quantity. Yet with ATM amounts of 20000bt you only lose out by approx. 900bt. Your banks fees and the difference between SK Money Changer and Thai Banks rate. :( BRING CASH.

Cheers JAY :jap:

It's another AEON branch in Airport Plaza. AEON seems to be the only known bank with no fees.

there are aeon atms at carrefour, airport plaza and both tescos. no charge and you can withdraw up to 40,000 baht at a time providing your foreign bank allows it.

If you are withdrawing US $ from an ATM using a US debit card you are receiving the exchange rate of the bank that owns the ATM. Does anyone know if the AEON exchange rates are good

The exchange rates at AEON are as bad as every other bank.

Last week I used an ATM card for an over the counter withdrawal at SCB and then at an AEON ATM. The difference in rates was 25 sataeng. Interest rates change continually and for a small transaction/withdrawal of 5,000 or 10,000 baht I do not worry about whether I might get a slightly better deal if I go to somewhere on the other side of town.

There was long thread about this recently

Agree, exactly. There are Aeon's at 4 locations in the CM area. Aeon is not a bank, which is why they do not charge the 150 baht fee.

Visa and MC set the rates. The issuing bank sets the w/d limits.

For Americans there is no need to pay either the 150 baht or a foreign exchange fee. Ever. And you won't get a better rate with any other method than an ATM card. Even cash. Those of other nationalities may have a different experience. Search the 20 other threads on the subject.

It all looks good on paper. But what are you loosing by changing it every six months or for that matter gaining. The rate is changing constantly during the day and after six months can be considerable.
I have a account at Siam and once a month take my credit card into the bank and get enough for a month. At any rate the difference is not going to make me or break me. I am retired and prefer a little convenience and peace of mind. I feel for the people who have to watch every baht.

RE #1: this sounds like cash advance vice a bank's credit/debit card (which might be Visa) where an ATM withdrawal is a debit of your own monies from your own account. In that case, it seems to be the prevailing bank to bank foreign exchange rate. I agree with the comment in #2 that the ATM rate seems like the best exchange rate available at that moment in time.

And, yes, the bank sets the w/d limits until it surpasses the Thai bank ATM limit.

RE #2: My experience says any foreign ATM card pays the 150 baht charge at the ATM but, yes, no exchange fee. And, of course, many people get hit with the "out of area" ATM fee charged by their bank in their home country.

In my expience the exchange rates set by visa and mastercard is very bad.

19/11/2010 rate of 29.90/US$ using Visa branded debit card at Aeon. No foreign transaction fee charged by my bank. I don't think that is such a bad rate.

I received the exact same rate making a purchase at Rimping the same day with the same card.

On that day Bangkok Bank was buying dollars for 29.49.

It was many months ago that I tested the EXCHANGE RATES between Aeon ATM and going inside a bank (Bangkok Bank), so I do not recall the exact exchange value (it was better then :annoyed:).

But Aeon did NOT take more in the exchange at that time.

Re #1: i was trying to keep it simple but, of course, you are correct about both limits.

Re #2: There are many ATM cards issued in the US where they will automatically reimburse the holder for the 150 baht fee.

I also agree with Sansai Sam that the exchange rate set by Visa and MC is very bad. Blame that on the US govt. But that a whole nother debate. And every other exchange method is worse. Wimpy and CMX got it right.

There is an AEON ATM in Carrefour on the Super Highway (near Kaeo Nawarat Road junction/Juvenile Court/Arcade Bus Station).

On the ground floor in a row of 3 ATMS in a corner - I think by one of the entrances to the covered car park.
