Police warn demonstrating Yellows to be peaceful

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) will not be allowed to stay overnight in front of Parliament during their protest today against the Constitution amendments, the Metropolitan Police said.

About 1,500 policemen would be deployed to handle the demonstration, which was expected to see 3,000-4,000 people participating, said Metropolitan Police spokesman Piya Uthayo.

They must protest in a peaceful manner under the law and should not obstruct traffic flow, he said.

The yellow-shirted PAD called a massive protest at Parliament today against the government's proposal to amend the military-sponsored Constitution. The amendment was against the people's will as it only benefited politicians, they said.

Bangkok is still under the state of emergency enforced since April when the red shirts held huge protests against the government.

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) announced five rules to control demonstrations. The rules prohibit protesters from blocking traffic routes or Parliament's gates, threatening others with any words or signs, using amplifiers or insulting the Monarchy.

Military reinforcements will be called up in case of emergency or if the situation gets out of hand, Piya said.

PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila said the group would begin its protest in front of Parliament by 8am today and would comply with the CRES rules.

"We won't block Parliament's gates, but I cannot guarantee whether it would affect traffic in the area as I expect up to 10,000 people to join the rally," he said.

The protest would end within a day and be conducted in accordance with the law, he added.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva instructed that the weekly Cabinet meeting be postponed from today to Thursday as he wanted ministers to concentrate on the Parliament debate.

Red-shirt leader Jatuporn Promphan urged members of the red groups to stay away from PAD protest sites in order to prevent any clashes between the two rival groups.

"The red shirts should not go there. Let's enjoy watching the two pro-dictator groups [the government and the PAD] fight each other. It is not our game, we should not get in the middle of their conflict," he said.

A little favoritism on the part of the police. It's OK for the red shirts to obstruct traffic, and for their security personnel to commit acts of violence (euphemistically called the "men in black"), but when it comes to the yellow shirts . . .

4 companies of metropolitan policemen deployed to guard Parliament

The Metropolitan Police Bureau deployed 4 companies of policemen to guard Parliament Tuesday when the People’s Alliance for Democracy holds a mass rally against charter amendments there.

Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt Gen Jakthip Chaijinda said PAD leaders had promised not to block traffic and gates of Parliament. The PAD leaders also promised to disperse at night, Jakthip said.

Constitutional ammendment is the big one and could lead to anything

Expect the PTP to also walk out if they dont get the chance to table a version that would mean the end of all charges against their main man.

Whatever way you look at it Thai politics seems to be heading for a dead end with no player (and there are mroe than 2) being willing to accept a losing outcome for their group. Interesting to observe but....

They are opposed to "the government's proposal to amend the military-sponsored Constitution." They are not saying the amendments are military backed. They like the 2007 constitution and don't want any of it changed, no matter how bad it is.

Thank you for the clarity here, it is interesting that the PAD wishes to keep the 'military' constitution. These are also the same group that wanted to limit people's right to vote, especially those from the rural areas, if I remember correctly.

Changing the constitution will not make much difference in the day-to-day lives of the millions that feel disinfranchised by the PAD elite leaning tendancies.

Food, Clothing, Work, Education, these seem to be what the masses need, another change the charter that will not directly assist the masses, does appear to be a bit of a waste of time. I do hope, at least the changes being proposed will allow for more inclusion and more clarity in the government process.....

You need some clarity there, as well. The proposal you speak of was merely a discussion point that was shelved ages ago.

Those necessity issues are precisely what the government has been working very hard for.

The changes to the constitution asked for by Red Leader Weng would allow for more inclusion in that those found guilty of electoral fraud and banned from politics would be re-instated.

An interesting "opinion piece" by the former editor of the the other paper who basically says that all three constitutional amendments are unlikely to be agreed upon for various reasons according to differing political viewpoints and that therefore the PAD are wasting their time demonstrating. Most importantly of all he comes to the conclusion that all of the amendments are politically self serving and none benefit the interest of the populace.
