My good friend Max died a couple of months ago, in the last couple of days I have received two e.mails with Max's name and e.mail address at the top. In both cases they refer to opening a link, when I try to open the link it just times out. Any clues?

I would say his email account has been hacked, and under no circumstances click on the link, it is most probably malicious. If you have clicked (which it seems you have) make sure you scan the computer with a good AV program and make sure it is clean before logging onto secure sites like internet banking.

It isn't necessarily the case that Max's e-mail account has been hacked, but rather it may be the OP's account. Somehow - probably by malware - the attacker may have gained a list of contacts from the OP's account and then spoofed Max's address. Alternatively using a social networking site somebody has figured out who the OP's contacts are/are likely to be and has then spoofed Max's e-mail address, which might have been publicly available.

To the OP:

I'm sorry for your loss.

But, WHY would you try opening the link??????

Did you really think your deceased friend was trying to contact you?

Thanks everyone for your replies, perhaps I was just lucky the links timed out and didn't open.

No el jefe, I don't believe in the supernatural, if I get an e.mail from anyone curiosity gets the better of me, who knows it could be some ravenous lady wanting to bed me.

I had the same thing happen to me. And when you receive an email from a friend a couple of months or so after his demise, of course you're curious and your initial reaction is to open it!

This mail opened up a site selling viagara, so it certainly was not from my computer. I don't look at the type of sites which spammers for this stuff target, but he might have done :D

Yours sounds like a spammer wannabe as it opened up a blank page lol. Just create a filter in your email account, very easy to do, and they'll go straight to delete before even reaching your inbox.
