Did True Online Stop Offering A "Premium" Service?

About 3 months ago I signed up to True Online here in Bangkok (On Nut). I chose their 4Mbps/1Mbps "premium" tarif, which was 799 Baht per month (200 Baht more than the standard). The advertised speeds were the same but the premium was supposed to be better for international surfing blah blah.

Then later they upgraded me without asking to 6Mbps/1Mbps, which was nice.

Looking at their packages I now see no reference to a premium service, and that for just 100 Baht more per month I could get 8Mbps/1Mbps.

Does anyone know if a premium service still exists? If not then I'll see if I can upgrade.

I'm pretty sure the "Premium" moniker applied to any package with 1 Mbps upstream speed, while the "Standard" packages offered 512 Kbps upstream. It looks like they've dropped those groups, put everything together and only offer 512 Kbps at the entry level.

Most Thai internet companies offer you the moon but for download speeds they can't deliver. The Thai gate way is small and over packed. As long as the gateway is limited there is not much that can be doen.

I've been on the lowest rate 6mbps 599THB ex vat package since they introduced it. I used to have to call them once a week when it dropped to below 1mbps and they'd fix it, only to last for another few days when I'd call them again, and again. Since then they've fixed it and it hangs around 4-4.4mbps, not really 6mpbs as advertised but I guess they figure that in and you cannot be bothered to waste your life calling them up every few days. Can only laugh at at all the 6mbps posters around town sucking in the customers. Where else are they going to go?

Weird, that sounds just like 3BB. It seems like they downgrade me as long as I don't say anything then when I call they "fix" it. They even call back - customer service is good. I just wonder why I have to call them all the time.

3BB has also stopped offering Premium except 1 package for 2500 / 5MB.

I think it's mainly oversubscription on the lines, not so much the Thai bandwidth limit anymore. It's hard to tell. But from all we know there's currently enough bandwidth going out of Thailand - it's just that it's not free either, they still have to pay for it. So oversubscribing their lines makes them money.

The thing is - I can download at my full 8Mbit / s with a download manager or with any torrent - that means huge things can be downloaded quickly. But for my VPN, or for web pages, it's often very slow. That's just bad technology, it should be the other way around.

If they had some good tech, they'd be able to prioritize anything that's not downloads or torrents, and split the remaining bandwidth *they* pay for amongst the torrents. I have a feeling though that they have a priority of some sort on YouTube as that usually works fine. So maybe that's it - YouTube can't really be throttled and maybe ppl are just watching it too much.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll probably spend the extra 100 Baht and jump from 6Mbps to 8Mbps.

I have noticed that the packages I've had from True have given me almost exactly the advertised bandwidth when tested with speedtest.net. In fact they have been so close to the advertised speed that I suspect True might be faking the figures somehow. I read somewhere that another ISP is doing that.

As for YouTube, I heard that for Thailand it comes off servers in Singapore, so that might account for the good speed as opposed to data coming from further afield.

ADSL is a contended service. That is, a number of customers share the advertised speed - usually 25 or 50 customers - so it's wrong to expect to get 100% of the headline figure. Things can get really bad if a few of the people you share with are heavily into downloading movies.
