Knife used in Pattaya Jetski Scam - Irish Tourist’s Life Threatened

PATTAYA: An Irish tourist, on his first visit to Pattaya with two friends, was threatened with a long-bladed knife by one of a group of Thai men who hire out jet skis opposite Mike Shopping Mall.

In what is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in Pattaya, certain jet ski operators have taken a leaf out of the scam book made infamous by their Phuket cousins, and are almost daily extorting money for alleged damage to their property from tourists who hire out the vessels.

A local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, witnessed a violent confrontation recently between the scammers and tourists, where a large knife was pulled.

Within half an hour of arriving on Pattaya beach he saw three young men (later identified as Irish tourists) hire jet skis for half an hour from a vendor. He watched as they took the jet skis out into the water and later was adamant as he [more...]

Scum of Thailand ... thai mafia linked businesses involved in tourism should be wiped out ... why doesn't the TAT step in and do something ... set-up a scene - video it and have the cuprits charged with extortion ... do the same in Phuket and in Samui with the Taxi mafia.

I mean it can't be that hard - can it ?

These guys are just biting the hand that feeds 'em, and it's the law abiding tourist businesses who suffer !

If the powers that be in Pattaya had a pair or even a semblance of a pair they would set all the jet ski operators down and not allow then to operate for 15 days. Maybe then the innocent parties would crack down on the guilty ones and clean up the mess. Aside from that, let them all suffer.

This high season is pretty low, increased competition for money, police owned jet skis, corrupt police everywhere, why is anyone surprised this shit is happening? These Irish guys will go home and tell their friends, who will tell their friends, etc etc , next high season even lower, blah blah.

This is not Disney Land people, pay attention.Give then what they want, the police are in on it, and live to play another day.

It is becoming quite clear that things are now completely out of control. When a scammer become a knife wielding thug with total impunity from the long arm of the law, it is time to reconsider our future here in Thailand.

Is there nothing to be done to reign in these daylight robbers, and to bring some sort of semblence of law and order to this country?

Just how long do they believe that they can continue with such antics before tourism becomes a forgotten word?!

One day these little scumbag idiots are going to pick on the wrong tourist(s) and end up on the receiving end of the blades that they so eagerly wield.

The Irish are known for their ability to demonstrate violence when provoked (just ask the English) and they can be very tough nuts to crack so these Thai morons were lucky on this occasion. We should invite a few groups of lads from Edinburgh and Glascow over and see how the Thai mini mafia fair against them!

Simple. Every western Govt should immediately advise every citizen not to rent the things. They will soon have to answer to the who ever they borrowed the scratch for the things in the first place if they can't pay the loan money back for the jetskis.

Abhisit has his hands full trying to stem the corruption at govt level................ no one is policing/ watching Pattaya anymore.

On a logical level, the turn down in tourism has hit the pockets at the top of the food chain. its no wonder they step up the crimewave; someone has to fill the gaps/pockets.

We are on a downward spiral..........

Thats why expats should direct everyone to thai beaches. Koh samet and the like have almost no issues.

Yes we should, but very undesirable non Thai hang out in Pattaya and now also Phuket. Sorry to say Pattaya looks beautiful on the outside but has become a septic tank.

The bottom line is that most of us can live in Thailand, and never be affected by these lowlife thugs. But, the average tourist does not seem to know any better, and the government, and the police seem either incapable, unwilling, or just too complicit to do anything. The shame is that while Thailand's more progressive neighbors like India, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia are doing alot to root out corruption, Thailand seems to be doing nothing. When was the last time the corruption commission arrested a CEO, or a City Mayor, or someone of consequence? The end result, over time, will be that Thailand's already anemic tourism industry will continue to suffer, and good, hard working Thais will suffer, in the end. So, the police and the government are in essence punishing honest Thais, with their ineptitude, and their indifference. This despite all of the egg in the face, that Thailand took, from the BBC exposure of the King Power scam, the jet ski scams, etc. Tourist beware.

I'm all for vigilante response as the law is useless. Time is coming. Local expats in Pattaya are getting very pp'd off at how this negativity is affecting their businesses and not long before they settle it their way. And for the Glasgow, Irish, Edinburgh contingency. You wouldn't stand a chance. Just for the record.

Finally for me the most stupid people are all the tourists who rent jet skies first place. I haven't met anybody in the last 23+years which I'm living here didn't complain about jet-skies, but many of those rent them out. Scam or not, nobody rents them, no scam.

It's common knowledge in Pattaya that many of the jet ski scammers are in cahoots with the local cops. The BiB may get a cut of any fine situation that they "resolve", but often they actually own the jet bikes. Gullible farangs on their first visit haven't got a chance.

Jeez...

Somebody is going to get killed or severely injured by one of these riff-raff. And I bet when it happens, the police and other officials will claim no knowledge of any scams ever happening in Pattaya.

TheWalkingMan

Thats why i always says, dont rent the jetski. Go somewhere else to ride if you want, but NOT thailand.

Let this culprit suffer, then only they know. No matter you are 100% right, this is thailand, they always stand on their side.

The best is go to another place for holiday. Why come here. Wait till the TAT beg us to come back, that is the time, we bang them back.

What is so big deal with your country. A cowboy town.

Well,... you must tougher than tough and as hard as rock Jimmy!

Evidently never been up against the likes of those you claim wouldnee stand a chance,... I don't care where in the world you're from friend,... there's none tougher or crazier.

The Germans during the war referred to them as "the ladies from hell" ,... kilt wearing heros that marched onward no matter what was being hurled at them!

You should get out more ;-)

I posted an article about this a couple of years ago.

It was exactly the same place ... Opposite Mike's shopping mall.

The police came twice to take the farangs away. This scam will never stop as long as the BIB are involved.

The police in Thailand have no interest in doing their job of stopping crime unless there is some kind of financial reward. I witnessed that about 10 minutes ago and am still contemplating on starting a new thread describing what I saw.
