IDF Chief warns over possible Hezbollah attack over Hariri report

2010-12-01 06:22:34 GMT+7 (ICT)

JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- The Commander in chief of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) Gabi Ashkenazi on Tuesday said that Hezbollah may attack Israel following the release of the findings by the UN tribunal on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.

Ashkenazi added that the more the published reports is in accordance with Hezbollah, the more stability will be maintained in the region. The IDF Chief spoke while visiting the Tel Hashomer army base.

The Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Ashkenazi also defended the appointment of Tamir Pardo as the new chief of Israeli intelligence agency (Mossad). Pardo was selected as head of Mossad on Monday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Ashkenazi said that Pardo is a professional person fit for the job and that he only had a marginal role in the leaking of a false document to the local Channel 2. Pardo saw the Galant Document after Col. Gabi Siboni, a former IDF officer, showed to him before leaking it to local television.

"Pardo has dozens of years of experience and was the right person to lead the Mossad in the coming years in light of the complex challenges facing the State of Israel," said Prime Minster Netanyahu on Tuesday.

Authorities have cleared Pardo from the allegations after a thorough investigation. They determined that the new Mossad chief was not involved in writing the document but Siboni reportedly consulted with him before leaking it to the media.

Finally, the IDF Chief also commented on Sunday’s release of classified documents by Wikileaks. Ashkenazi said that this event should be taken as a teaching and to raise awareness of the dangers of not protecting classified information accordingly.
