Noise Worry At Bangkok's New Airport

Noise worry at airport

BANGKOK: -- Several housing estates around the Suvarnabhumi Airport are likely to be affected by the loud noise of aeroplanes once the project is completed, a senior official at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment warned yesterday.

Sonthi Kachawat, a director at the ministry's Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, said buildings located near both ends of the runways would be worst affected by noises louder than 80 decibels.

He said more and more housing estates were springing up around the new airport and buyers of homes in these projects would be affected by the noise problem once the airport was in operation.

When fully operational, the airport will see jetliners taking off or landing every two minutes around the clock, Sonthi said. He said that according to a requirement in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) report, New Bangkok International Airport Co, which runs the airport, has to acquire sufficient land at both ends of the airport to ensure that no residences are built too close.

"But the process is quite slow, so new buildings have sprung up near the airport," said Sonthi. He said the NBIA would have to provide noise protection for these buildings, such as installing noise-proof glass panes, at its own cost.

Supat Wangwongwattana, deputy director-general of the Pollution Control Department, said he believed airport authorities would implement measures to reduce noise that were outlined in the EIA report.

Another headache!

thai ppl worrying about possible noise over 80db ?????

uiiiii...my personal joke of the year... :o:D:D

Good job opportunity for a double glazing saleman :o

Anyone know if the runways on the airport run north/south or east/west?

N <-->S, AFAIK.

Note: the new housing estates came AFTER the airport.

You can't buy a property close to an airport then expect the airport to pay for noise insulation

<...its taxpayers money folks!>

IMO, when somebody decides to build a house right in the path of the runways after the airport location has been approved, did so in full knowledge of the noise risk and therefore will not be able to claim noise protection from the airport authorities.

Subsequently, a developer who sells a house with no adequate protection and not informing the buyer of the noise risk is selling an inferior product. but it is still the buyer beware that comes first.

Authorities that have given the development and building permissions after the location approval date are more responsible than the airport authorities and should therefore carry the cost of sound protection upgrading.

Only for existing buildings and development plans prior to the approval date should fall under the responsibilty of the airport authority.

It would be nice to know who owns what, just to see who profits...

Looks like it, view from the sky !

You can expect the airport to pay and if the owner is a politician, in the military with high rank, or in the police with high rank you will probably get it.

I think far, far, far fewer people will be affected by aircraft noise in the new location (which is out in the boonies) than in the current one. I live under the SE flight path and at midday the shadows of the planes fly down my street and conversations halt until they pass. I can't wait for it to be someone else's problem :o

Now if only they would move the ###### highway behind my bedroom!

Nice map!

I guess, then, that the noise level from aircraft should not be too high at the position marked with a red x in the attached map (177 KB).

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

What about the cracks that were reported in the runways ?

What about the cracks that were reported in the runways ?

Cracks? What Cracks!?

This is a marvel of modern engineering: narrow strips of empty space to allow the tarmac to expand in the summer's blistering heat (or so they will say, and woe betide anyone who dare say otherwise)

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place
