Army believes celebration for the King will be peaceful

BANGKOK, 1 December 2010 (NNT)-The Commander of Army Region 1, Major General Udomdej Sitabutr, has expressed his confidence that the celebration of His Majesty the King’s 83rd birthday anniversary will be joyous and peaceful, with no incidents to mar the great event.

The celebrations, taking place from December 1st until 9th, have come under the tight security of the Army and policemen. Celebration venues and surrounding areas will be under 24-hour surveillance.

Major General Udomdej has, meanwhile, expressed his confidence that there will be no disruptions during the auspicious event, despite its coinciding with the political gatherings planned by both the yellow- and the red-shirts.

PM advises new Red-Shirt leader to learn from the past

BANGKOK, 2 December 2010 (NNT) – As the New Red-shirt leader vowed to restore democracy in Thailand through peaceful means, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva advised the new leader not to make the same mistakes as the former leaders did.

Following the appointment of Mrs. Tida Tawornsed, the wife of Dr. Weng Tojirakarn, as the new leader of the anti government group, the red-shirt; the premier has advised group members against unlawful acts should they plan rallies in the future.

Mrs Tida has, meanwhile, committed herself to holding peaceful demonstrations, getting rid of social disparity, and promoting equality in the nation. She will also continue to push for the release of all Red shirt core leaders and other members from prison, adding that the rules of law surrounding their cases should be handled with transparency and honesty.

With several political rallies planned to be held very shortly, provincial authorities have been told to be on alert for a group of political extremists. The authorities, however, are not overly concerned with protesters in Udorn and Chiengmai—considered the strongholds of the anti-government red-shirt—saying those protesters are only activists, not extremists.

Reds should be mindful of their activies: PM

By The Nation

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Thursday urged the red shirts to think things through before the country would have to bear the consequences of their activities.

"The security authorities are obligated to ensure everything stay within the legal limits and without any harmful effects on the country's revered institution," he said.

Abhisit was reacting to a red-shirt plan to reopen political schools, seen as a platform to fan the anti-monarchy sentiment.

He reminded two factions within the red-shirt movement, one led by Somyos Prueksakasemsuk and another by Sombat Boonngarm-anong, to reconsider their action plans.

The Somyos faction calls on its supporters to put on black mourning dress throughout December, coinciding with the celebrations for His Majesty.

The Sombat faction will hold a public event on December 5 in defiance of the King's birthday.

"The reds should be mindful about peace, social order and the feelings of their fellow Thais," the prime minister said.

In regard to the planned rally by the People's Alliance for Democracy, he said he was trying to hold a meeting with PAD leaders before December 11.

"I have no intention to block a peaceful public assembly but want to remind organisers to abide by the law," he said.
