Distance Degree

Featured Replies

Hi,

Ive been teaching in Thailand for five years(without a degree) and from student feedback, think I'm doing a decent job.I was wondering if anyone had done or could recommend any worthwhile distance degrees. Also,if a work permit could be obtained with one of these.

Thanks for your help.

IMO , as I already have a degree and am halfway through my 2nd , the Open University is the best and only worthwhile distance learning degree you can achieve. It usually takes 3-5 years depending on your spare time , level 1,2,3 and is recognised worldwide. It is as valuable as a residential degree and you can gain work and even places at other Uni's as a lecturer based on these qualifications. Levels 2 and 3 require you sit an exam , you need to complete an assignment each month. Each Course is worth 60 credits. You need 300 credits for a B degree , 360 for a B (Hons ). You can transfer OU credits to residential courses and vice versa.

OU

Oenology I suppose Chon :o

Oenology I suppose Chon  :D

Yep Doc! , The 2nd is a masters in Viticulture ( I wish.....hic :o )

I'm doing my Masters by distance learning from Sheffield Uni. The benefit is that you don't actually have to go to Sheffield to take it :o

However they are a bit slack and disorganised and while a Sheffield masters may be more prestigious that an OU one the OU probably do a better job....

I suppose if you have a BA/Bsc in the first place it's an option to progress to the Masters as distance learning with an established conventional Uni, I would agree that this route would be preferrable to the OU.

With the OU the yearlly exam usually takes place in the nearest pukka Uni. My exam is in Brookes ( Oxford Uni) in October.... :D

Not looking forward to that a lot..... :o

Unfortunately, from what I can see, they don't allow students based in Thailand.

blake 7....Sheffield Uni or Sheffield Hallam? The last time I asked Sheffield Uni does not do distant learning. Sheffield Hallam does.

Feedback from some friends, OU is not as good as it was when it started initially. Apparently some countries do not accept the qualfication for "skilled migration". One of my friends who applied for migration to a Western country was rejected stating her qualifications were not "recognised". They were from OU.

Headhunter buddies tell me a lot of MNCs do not want candidtates from OU. I have no idea why.

One should really be careful where one gets their qualifications from. There are tons of people with MBAs nowadays so the potential employers can pick and choose.

Perhaps souldesire, you can check with the agents for distant learning in Thailand. I know there is an agent in Ploenchit which does distant learning for Leicester University in UK amongst others in UK and Aussie. There is also another in Siam area, next to Novotel called Plan-It. tel No. 02 658 4898

Better do it through an agent to ensure everything goes smoothly and help and resources are available. I think the whole MBA costs is between GBP5,000-8000. Going through an agent in Malaysia or Singapore is much cheaper than a Thai agent. I did my research on this when I took mine.

Possible site in Malaysia www.hartford.com.my

Good luck!

You'll be able to tell everyone that you went through Oxford :o

SK1972 - No, it is the "real" Sheffield Uni - the school of East Asian Studies. They even have a distance learning department (though they aren't much cop. pm me if you want more details.

Hi blake7, thanks for the clarification. Thanks but I already have my MBA.

That's strange Sk , I was offered jobs in OZ and Singapore based on my BA achieved at the OU , and this was less than 12 months ago. I suppose if you are migrating East-West it may have a different bearing on the application.

The fact that I have 20 years experience in my field probably also has a weighting I guess.

:o

As I said Chon, I have no idea why.

Perhaps your "field" is in the category of the Oz or Sg listing criteria.

I was also referring to Masters programme. I have no idea about BAs from OU.
