As all of us know, many expatriate men here in Thailand live with (or marry) women from what polite people call the "sex industry".

An equal or greater number of men pair off with "real girls".

My question is this: can friendships truly exist between men with "real" girlfriends and men with "sex industry" girlfriends?

I ask this because it is my experience that they can't. For example, when was the last time you saw an expatriate man with a "sex industry" girlfriend who had achieved anything better in life than the ubiqitous one-room concrete shit-hole apartment in Sukhumwit Road? When was the last time you saw an expatriate man with a "sex industry" girlfriend who had a house, a car, a business, money, ambition, savings...........a life.

Don't get me wrong. I know many men here in Thailand who live with their little "sex industry" girlfriends. I like many of them, but because of their hopeless lack of status, and their highly questionable choice in women, I find it very difficult to respect any of them as true friends.

Perhaps some of you will beg to differ.

I personally would never have considered to marry a bar girl, but I have friends who have, and they seem to be doing OK. My wife (and I) has no problem with either them or their spouses - we treat people the way they treat us.

I think you need to get out and meet some of these people before you pass judgement - there is more to life than the internet, you know......
