Jose Mourinho launched a withering attack on outspoken Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho by suggesting the Portuguese international 'should have an IQ test' after his outburst this week.

Carvalho broke ranks yesterday by questioning Mourinho's decision to field William Gallas in defence ahead of him for the Barclays Premiership opener against Wigan on Sunday.

Carvalho is likely to be fined two weeks' wages for his comments and Mourinho was quick to retort.

'Ricardo Carvalho seems to have problems understanding things, maybe he should have an IQ test.

'I am not happy to have heard about this through the papers. Ricardo has worked with me for four years and I do not understand these quotes, he probably needs to see a doctor.

'I told the players this summer they will need to have patience because we have a great squad and everyone needs an opportunity.

'Carvalho knows how I work, I think he is just temporarily angry but I will speak with him personally. We can't have this kind of thing at Chelsea.'

After the match, which Chelsea won fortuitously thanks to Hernan Crespo's brilliant injury-time winner, Carvalho told Portuguese newspaper A Bola: 'I want to know why I didn't play.

'How can I explain when I don't understand it? Sincerely, I gave a lot of thought and time to myself but cannot find a valid explanation. It's totally incomprehensible.

'I don't understand why Mourinho said I have to wait for another opportunity to play this season. I don't understand the reason he put me in a group including Robert Huth, Joe Cole and Tiago.

'Sincerely, I don't understand why he told me what he told me. I don't believe I'm going to be third choice.

'The Premiership has begun and I will play many games, I have no doubt. It's incomprehensible that I will become third choice.'

I've never seen a more gutsy or cool man than Mourinho.
