Indonesia arrests four suspected terrorists linked to Tholut and Bashir

2010-12-14 20:35:49 GMT+7 (ICT)

SOLO, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesian authorities on Tuesday announced the arrest of four more suspected terrorists following the capture of Abut Tholut, one of Indonesia's most wanted terrorists.

Senior Commander Petrus Golose, director of the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) and the National Police's anti-terror unit Densus 88 confirmed the arrests, alleging that four individuals collaborated with Tholut.

On Friday, officials announced the capture of Tholut, who is also known as Mustafa, and is believed to have been the field leader of the August armed robbery of the CIMB bank in Medan, North Sumatra.

Authorities said that the robberies were perpetrated in order to raise funds for an armed group which conducts military training in an Aceh forest. The training camp was organized by Tholut and is believed to be planning Mumbai-style terror attacks.

In addition, on Monday, prosecutors said Indonesian Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir, 72, who is the suspected leader of a terrorist paramilitary training facility in the Aceh province of Sumatra, has been charged with at least five articles within Indonesia's anti-terrorism laws.

The most serious of those charges is the mobilizing of people for acts of terrorism, which carries the death penalty if convicted.
