Italian PM Berlusconi wins key confidence vote

2010-12-15 00:43:09 GMT+7 (ICT)

ROME, ITALY (BNO NEWS) -- Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi on Tuesday surprisingly won a key confidence vote in the lower House by a small margin, the ANSA news agency reported, leading to riots injuring several people.

The House voted 314 to 311 with two abstentions and this slim margin of victory may mean that Berlusconi's term will not last until its end in 2013. Analysts said that the Prime Minister needs to win the support of the centrist Catholic UDC party to continue at the helm.

Berlusconi said he was pleased with the result of the vote and criticized the decision to hold a confidence vote at this time of potential risk stemming from international investors' pressures on the euro zone.

The crisis in the Italian government began when Berlusconi lost a majority in the House after splitting ways with House Speaker Fini, who has turned against him. In January, Berlusconi expects to present a project of federalist reform to strengthen the nation's economy.

A snap vote would then be called in late March. With Tuesday’s victory, it is believed that Berlusconi's position will not be in peril but the Northern League and his allies might not win full control of the Senate.

On Monday, former ally Gianfranco Fini issued an ultimatum for Berlusconi to quit or face the fall of his government. Berlusconi responded by saying that he will not quit as he does not accept threats.

Once a loyal partner, Fini has turned against the Prime Minister, accusing him of running the government like one of the companies in his vast business empire and attacking him over a series of corruption scandals.
