Teenage girl expelled from Indonesian school after giving birth

MADIUN, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- A 16-year-old student was expelled on Thursday after giving birth in the high school's clinic in Madiun, Indonesia, the Jakarta Globe reported.

Sumardiono, the principal of the vocational high school in East Java province, said the eleventh grade student - who was only identified by R. - suddenly and unexpectedly gave birth to a premature baby. The student was taken to the school's clinic after complaining of abdominal pain.

"According to one of the teachers, this student had asked to be allowed to go home, complaining of a stomach ache after taking part in midyear examinations," said Sumardiono. "She was taken to the school's health unit and was left there."

When the teacher returned to the health unit, he found that the teenage student's water had broken and she was amidst a pool of blood. A doctor and a nurse were summoned to help and the girl gave birth to a premature six-month baby girl.

The girl reportedly lives in the village of Rejosari with her parents, who took her daughter to Soedono Regional Hospital in Madiun. Sumardiono informed the parents that the teen had been expelled for violating school rules.

"All students enrolled at this school signed a statement agreeing to abide by the school's rules, such as not being naughty, not marrying and other prohibitions. The agreement had to be signed by both the student and their parents," said the high school principal.

Sumardiono added that no one at the school suspected the girl was pregnant as she was small in stature and always wore loose clothing. She was well-know on the campus and active in sports, studies and school organizations.

Sad, but such things happen all-too-often - around the world. If I had a school near her house, I'd let her be a student. Hasn't she suffered enough? Probably psychic wounds for life. And who knocked her up? Even if it was a boy close to her age, he should be sternly disciplined.
