Mobile Networks Tweak Servers for New Year

Mobile network operators are optimizing messaging servers for the New Year holidays in order to facilitate millions of well-wishes circulating on social media networks, SMS messaging and Blackberry messaging. The traffic of mobile communications is expected to double during the festive period.

Total Access Communication, or DTAC, Senior Vice President Pakorn Pannachet said that DTAC's messaging servers have been optimized to cope with the expected information traffic surge during the New Year holidays.

DTAC believes New Year well-wishing through social media networks will be very popular since the number of smartphone users has rocketed from 1.9 million to 2.6 million this year with an expected 25-percent increase in usage compared to the normal one million users.

Nonetheless, SMS and MMS messages are still very popular as DTAC expects a 37-percent increase in usage, or a total of 69 million SMS messages circulating during New Year's eve and the holidays. MMS messages are expected to rise by one million compared to previous years.

DTAC has tweaked its network for the massive flow of electronic messages and placed an engineering team on standby during the holidays as well as dispatched mobile signal routers nationwide particularly at congested areas such as countdown venues.

Advanced Info Service, or AIS, Assistant Vice President Pratthana Leelapanang said AIS has doubled its mobile internet capacities, particularly for Blackberry smartphone chat and messaging functions, as it expects the use of SMS, MMS, Facebook, Twitter and Blackberry Messenger services to double on New Year's eve.

AIS predicted that SMS usage will increase by 15 percent and servers have been expanded by two folds to handle the information flow. The servers will be able to handle 57 million MMS messages per hour with an expected increase of 25 percent compared to previous years.

Engineers have been placed on standby at the central and regional service centers to provide on-site services and handle signal problems that may arise on New Year's eve.

New Year Spending Expected to Top Bt3.8 Bln

2010 Thailand is experiencing an exuberant sense of holiday this year. Tourists have been flocking to every possible travel destination from north to south and the tourism authority is expecting nearly four billion baht in holiday spending will be circulating in the local economy during the next four days alone.

Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Suraphon Svetasreni said that there will be around 1.59 million local and foreign tourists holidaying in Thailand from December 31 to January 3.

They are expected to altogether spend around 3.85 billion baht while traveling.

TAT estimated that about 190,000 Thai tourists will each spend 2,100 baht per day, or 910 million baht in total, while approximately 1.4 million foreign visitors will each spend 4,800 baht a day or around 2.94 billion baht in total.

Suraphon said easing political tension in Thailand and the improving economy encourage people to spend more.

Various New Year countdown activities that have been planned along with the government’s stepped up security measures have also convinced revelers and holiday-makers to enjoy themselves more.

TAT reckoned that most popular tourist destinations during this holiday will be mountainous areas in northern Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Sorn, as well as places where temperature is nice and cool.

Traditional destinations, including temples and floating markets, and natural holiday spots as well as beaches remain the most preferred holiday spots for travellers.

By The Nation

med_gallery_327_1086_29411.jpg

In a move to tackle drug trade inside prisons, the Correction Department yesterday described the different techniques used by inmates with the help of corrupt prison guards.

More than 3,000 mobile phones were found and confiscated in prison searches over the year, and many visitors or new inmates were caught with a handset hidden inside their rectum. In fact, one man brought three handsets into prison this way.

Also, 23 prison guards were prosecuted or punished for helping facilitate drug trade from October last year to September this year, the department's director-general Chartchai Sutthiklom said.

Under the crackdown ordered by the government, police apprehended hundreds of drug dealers and criminals in several nationwide raids. National police chief Wichean Potephosree said the crackdown's first assessment would be conducted on January 7, and another hunt would be conducted on January 21.

The North, especially Chiang Mai, has recorded cold temperatures for the sixth day in a row, prompting an increase in hotel occupancy.

Mornings have been chilly in many Chiang Mai districts, especially in national parks near large water resources. Temperatures are expected to drop another few degrees from the average 15-18 degrees Celsius, the weather office said yesterday. The cool temperatures will continue until around January 5.

Fishermen have been advised to stay onshore in Nakhon Si Thammarat and areas to its south, while residents in low-lying areas have been warned of flash floods.

BANGKOK, Dec 31 - One hundred thousand people or more are expected to crowd the CentralWorld New Year Countdown to greet the new year, according to the management of CentralWorld shopping complex in Bangkok's Ratchaprasong intersection.

The company urged the public to join the event to welcome in the New Year 2011.

Central Pattana Marketing Department deputy director Sakorn Taweesin said the event this year is organised under the "Jump Up" theme so participants can jump up and down together for the very moment of the countdown climax. Such activity is considered the highlight of this year. Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra is also to join the celebration.

Regarding security measures, Mr Sakorn said he believed everything will be under control. Bangkok metropolitan police and soldiers will be monitoring and facilitating commuters participating in the event.
