Can anyone let me know of any social groups etc in Samui. I have recently moved to the island, near Maenam, having retired in the UK, but am finding it difficult to make social contacts.

Go to a rock gig (unfortunately not many of them) and meet like-minded NORMAL people. Just so happens one of the best THE FLOWERS OF SAMUI are playing My Bar in Meanam on Tuesday night 4th January....

I will come def, if Major Major promises best rock!! I am really longing for that - real good live rock.

No extremely bad boring cover band and versions of Smoke on the water, Lady in Black, Final Countdown, Keep the Faith, Buffalo Soldier and all that boring old farts!:redcard2::crazy::realangry::crazy:

ok, after decades on the island becoming exceedingly modest concert wise, Humble Pie, Ted Nugent, Rory Gallagher, Hawkind or Thick as a brick, Perfect Strangers...would be ok!

Can't find anything at all about the mentioned band on Goggle. An all female Group? Like The Bangles? What flowers of Samui? There ain't no flowers :giggle:

Where is My Bar? What are NORMAL people? Where are real good rock concerts?

I think Major (Dave) Major was attempting some humour. The band is the Stuart Bush Band - I think (if not then it's the one fronted by Janni with Big Dave and that's pretty crap!)

If it's Stuart Bush then a good blend of music and super-well played.

MY BAR opposite Soi 1 and Family Mart.

[it is indeed The Flowers of Samui playing My Bar on Tuesday...a one-off. They usually play different bars in Bangrak every few weeks.I saw them in the Jimi Hendrix bar in Chaweng a few weeks ago. A mixture of their own stuff with cover versions such as Bowie, Clash, Undertones, Jam, Green Day - even played a Britney Spears song last time! Great energy, certainly nothing else like them in Samui. No chance of them playing the boring old songs mentioned above!

I was warned off the rotary, as I gather they have had a few internal problems.

have got any hobbies, fishing, golf?

usually 5-7 after work, one of the Ms is away now on long vaccation in BKK but the other M is a nice guy from Scotland. its difficult as others have said Samui is Samui. personally i used to like going around differnt places on my own usually around, soi reggae, soi green mango, soi solo. plenty of good social groups there but not sure they are the kind you want. its a case of getting the right crowd on the right day. another place in soi Reggae is ONs bar, near the top on the left, owner is really nice guy works behind the bar and good lot of expats. i was never into pool but very good way to socialise is pool league.

Social Contacts - hmmm.....

I once tried asking something similiar and then I realized that making social contacts in samui is pretty much impossible, why because certain groups only go to certain areas or have no time take as a few examples

1. People only into the bar scene who go night after night either to escape the life or situation there in or just to eventually to lose more brain cells

2. Foreigners busy working all the time who don't even have time for a so called life

3. The family foreigner who really don't have much time since their kids take up all the time

4. Shady foreigners - lets be honest I'm sure there's quite a bit especially like the absolute group we have all seen roaming the chaweng areas

5. Foreigner only interested in having a new thai woman every night only over time to finally get some kind of disease and pass away

6. Foreigner as a loner - I'm sure quite a few people for this one, after having tried to find contacts you realize the social scene is pretty much fake and just plain crap

I've been to some of this so called clubs more like fake atmosphere. If your looking for social contacts I wish you good luck

If you are into wines, you may try to join the SWINES (Samui Winetasting Society) on one of their outings. They usually head for a picturesque part of the island at midday, each one bringing a secretly wrapped bottle of red and conduct a blind winetasting with scoresheets.Usually held once a fortnight, it is by invitation only and they have a website www.samuiyachtclubregatta.com click on "Grapevine" They usually invite a bar or massage parlour to join them which has helped many working girls see a different side of Samui.

Posh is not a word that I would use - but from my experiences - just great fun
