Where To Buy Ubuntu 10.10 .. By Mail & Paypal

I have been wanting to try Linux for some time .. and recently saw the Ubuntu on a 4gb flash drive that Amazon sells. Sounded like a plan until .. apparently, Amazon won't ship to Thailand. I looked at a number of online shops in Thailand but none seem to offer the flash drive or disks.

So I'm needing to find an alternative means of getting my mitts on some disks .. or preferably, the flash drive version.

I'm out in the boonies, so mail and PayPal are most convenient for me.

I know that I can download and burn, but ..

- Slow download speeds

- No DVD disks

- No experience burning DVD

I suppose I could throw the dice, order some DVD's online, download Ubuntu and try using the DVD in my laptop(Vista) and burn a disk.

If someone knows how I can order that flash drive version here in Thailand and pay with PayPal, I would appreciate it.

I'm sure that any mall with computer shops and repairs would do it for you for a nominal fee. Ubuntu is a very slick operating system, it installs within minutes. If you're in BKK then Pantip plaza would have loads of places towards the back that would do that.

You might want to double check whether you need to burn to disc these days. Pretty sure its all exe files now.

I know it looks a little crazy but with a little googling you will pick an cd size iso which is much easier to download and burn at a slow speed. It normally downloads well as it is a Thai mirror.

I don't know which Ubuntu to use as I am with PClinuxOS, but it is all linux under the hood. - someone here could point it out at the mirror for ya.

With some methods (I have not done it yet myself) depending on your system you may be able to place that iso on a flash drive and install from it and not worry about burning.

Once downloaded an iso if right clicked will have the option to burn if the burner in installed in your windows, just do it - normally works just fine. If not yet installed I think it is in power toys and free at the MS site. That is what I used in the past.

Once installed and updated it will have everything that the DVD has.

I can give it to you for free, if you want. I live in Bangkok. I can give it to you in person, or mail it to you if you send me your address. I can also upload it to my dropbox and send you the username and password for you to download easily.

You can also have it mailed to you by Canonical for free by applying to, "SHIPIT." If you look through Ubuntu dot com properly, you'll find SHIPIT.

Once you have the Ubuntu CD or ISO file you can use this free utility to install it on a flash drive of your choice:

Universal USB Installer is a Live Linux USB Creator that allows you to choose from a selection of Linux Distributions to put on your USB Flash Drive. The Universal USB Installer is easy to use. Simply choose a Live Linux Distribution, the ISO file, your Flash Drive and, Click Install.

@deserted - I'm out in the boonies and no plans to visit BKK any time soon.

@CharlieH & Derfio - that link leads to some information which says, "Follow the instructions on the ShipIt website to place an order - delivery will typically take 6-10 weeks." I really don't want to wait that long.

@sulasno & Derfio - If my next plan doesn't work, I'll PM you begging for help. :)

@RKASA & Rice_King - another thing that made me hesitate about downloading to one of my flash drives, re the USB Installer, "IMORTANT NOTE: Ensure that your USB drive is fat16/fat32 formatted, otherwise Syslinux WILL fail and your drive WILL NOT Boot."

I have a fair amount of stuff already on my drives and they may be formatted NTSC .. so ..

One of my Thai buddies in BKK will be doing some shopping and mailing for me, easier to do an ATM transfer. Includes a few blank DVD's and a new Samsung 7200 RPM hybrid drive.

So I'll try with DVD's and if it works, will get a dedicated USB flash drive when I have an opportunity.

Thanks.

A new 8 GB USB flash drive goes for well under 400 baht these days. For this project you could get by with a 4 GB drive which cost less than 200 baht. That, and the fact that flash drives are formatted by default to FAT32 and NOT NTFS (NTSC is something else entirely) make your excuses laughable.

It's usually shipped out by TNT and takes less than two weeks from when you apply to arrive.

@Rice_King -- sorry that you found my "excuses" laughable. First, I didn't realize that a reason would be seen as an excuse. Please! Second, price ain't the issue. Location, and my motivation to avoid traffic in cities large enough to have IT malls, is. Apparently you missed my anticipated purchase of a Bt 3,xxx hybrid drive .. which could have given you a clue as to whether I could/will-want-to afford another Bt 400 flash drive,

I was unaware of the standard formatting of flash drives, So thank you for telling me that.

Also please, please, please forgive my error re: NTSC vs NTFS.

PS - I think replies like yours are one of the reasons so many noobs like me avoid Linux forums.
