Youths want peace

By THE NATION ON SUNDAY

Children want adults to end quarrels and restore peace in the country as their New Year gift, a survey has found. The largest group of young respondents - or 41.5 per cent - wanted adults to stop their quarrels, followed by 25 per cent who wanted them to stop cheating and corruption, and 17 per cent who wanted them to stop disharmony or political tension.

Those were among the first five things that respondents said adults should stop, according to Noppadon Kannikar, director of Abac Poll Research Centre at Assumption University. About 7 per cent of the respondents said they wanted adults to stop doing anything or creating any conditions that would lead to conflict, and 6 per cent told them to stop selfishness. The survey was conducted from Wednesday to Thursday (December 29-30, 2010) with 1,135 young respondents aged between 10-15 in Bangkok and neighbouring provinces.

Meanwhile, the first five things youngsters said they wanted adults to do more of were to be good role models with morality (44 per cent), to help juveniles be happy (21 per cent), do things that will help bring harmony and love (16 per cent), do useful things for the sake of communities and the country (10 per cent) and restore Thailand's image (6 per cent).

For a part of the poll that allowed them to give more than one answer, 92.5 per cent wanted this year to be a year of restoring peace. Around 91 per cent wanted Thai people to be kind, generous and merciful. Ninety per cent said this year should be a year of love and harmony, while 87.5 per cent wanted people to be honest and against corruption.

Computers, the Internet, iPad and iPod were the most wanted gifts by youngsters (31 per cent of respondents), while 16 per cent wanted mobile phones and 15 per cent wanted scholarships and educational tools.

Actor killed by exploding firework

By The Nation on Sunday

RAYONG - A former film actor was killed yesterday when a firework exploded in his face. Somjate Sa-ard, 41, died at a restaurant in Klaeng district in Rayong, after joining a New Year countdown party.

Police said two fireworks were prepared to celebrate the New Year and placed near a stage at the front of the restaurant. People were enjoying dancing near midnight and preparing to celebrate the New Year, when someone secretly lit the fireworks.

Seeing smoke from the fireworks, Somjate rushed to put them out, but one exploded in his face while he bent down over it.

His elder sister Chamaiphorn Sa-ard said she wanted police to investigate her brother's death. She wanted to know who provided the fireworks and if they had got permission from police to light them in a restaurant.

Somjate was hired as a supporting actor for several movies and portrayed negative characters in many soap operas.

His funeral is being held at Wat Mahachai Chumphon in Rayong's Muang district.

Merit-making rituals mark start of New Year

By The Nation

med_gallery_327_1086_42385.jpg

Thais across the country attended merit-making rituals seeking good luck for themselves and their families as a propitious start to the New Year yesterday.

In Bangkok, Governor MR Sukhumbhand Paribatra led officials and members of the public to offer food and flowers to 284 Buddhist monks early yesterday at the Lan Khon Muang plaza in front of City Hall.

Sukhumbhand also presided over a ceremony to launch four city trams to transport people free of charge who want to make merit at nine temples - Wat Suthat Thepphawararam, Wat Phra Chetuphon, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Chana Songkhram, Wat Bowon Niwet Ratcha Worawihan, Wat Srakesa Rajavara-mahavihara, Wat Rakung Kosittaram, Wat Arun and Wat Kanlayanamit. The trams will run from 8.30am to 4pm every day until January 9.

There were similar scenes of people attending morning alms and merit-making in other provinces.

In Buri Ram's Chalerm Phrakiat district, some 2,000 people walked up to the historic Phanom Rung Temple to attend merit-making, and sought the blessings of the Hindu God Shiva and other divine beings yesterday, which was New Year's day. This was a revival of a local tradition done 100 years ago.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva made a New Year's wish, summoning the power of the Buddhist Triple Gems and all sacred beings to protect all Thais from harm and for them to be happy, prosperous and healthy and become an important force for the country's development.

Abhisit thanked all Thais for getting through 2010 despite many difficulties and for cooperating with the government. The PM expressed hope that 2011 would see more improvement in economic, social and political aspects than in the past two to three years. He also urged all Thais to follow His Majesty the King's speech on December 5, 2010 to clearly understand and perform their duties to their best, consciously and carefully.

New Year's revellers begin returning to Bangkok

LAMPANG, Jan 2 – Numbers of holiday revellers who have visited their hometowns across the country during the New Year's festival on Sunday have begun flowing back to Thai capital to resume work Tuesday while the authorities adjusted measures by closely monitoring traffic and safety standards on roads bound for Bangkok.

Aunsorn Kaewkangwan, director of the government's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Regional Center Region 10 in Lampang, urged officials in four upper northern provinces including in Chiang Mai, Lampang, Lamphun and Mae Hong Son to adjust safety measures in preparation for heavy traffic on roads heading Bangkok.

The regional agency closely monitors service points in parallel with traffic checkpoints on highways bound for the capital to prevent road accidents and monitor motorcyclists and speeding drivers as some New Year's holidaymakers and revellers begin returning to the capital.

According to the latest report, the four upper northern provinces experienced 197 road accidents with 10 fatalities and 210 injured persons during the first four days of the "seven high-risk New Year’s holidays" from Dec 29 through Jan 4.

In the southern region, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Regional Center Region 12 in Songkhla, meanwhile, has provided vehicles for rescue and mobile units for auto repair service stationed at the service points, particularly motorcycles which are the vehicles involved in the highest number of accidents.

During the first four days of the government seven-day campaign against road accidents, eight persons were killed, 116 others were injured in road accidents in the five southern border provinces of Songkhla, Yala, Satun, Pattani and Narathiwat.

In Phuket, 46 accidents, three fatalities and 55 wounded were reported while drunken driving and high speed driving were major causes of accidents, Phuket Deputy Governor Niwit Arunrat said.

In related developments, over 400 holiday goers and travellers crowded the central train station in Chiang Mai early Sunday morning to use free train service en route from the major northern provinces to Bangkok amid stringent security and luggage inspections to prevent drug smuggling.

Currently, Chiang Mai-Bangkok rail tickets have been fully booked through Jan 4 while the bus terminal in the provincial seat has been crowded as well.

In the northeastern province of Buri Ram, the bus operators have supplied more buses with 48 trips a day to serve the high volume of travellers who did not book tickets to Bangkok in advance. (MCOT online news)
