Cold lava flooding after Merapi eruptions hit Indonesia's Yogyakarta

YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- With heavy rainfall accompanied by sporadic but strong wind currents, Indonesia's Yogyakarta was hit by the largest outflow of cold lava and mud, locally known as lahar dingin, since October's Merapi eruptions, local media reported.

The cold lava damaged several bridges and created chaos as traffic flow was cut off for around 18 hours on one of the city's main highways, which was flooded under meter-deep lahar in several areas.

"In addition to destroying the Gempol main bridge on the Putih River, lahar also destroyed bridges in other villages, leading to the isolation of hundreds of residents in seven hamlets," Heri Prawoto, head of the Magelang district’s Disaster Management Office, told the Jakarta Globe.

According to Heri, the cold lava flooding affected residents from the Putih River in Jumaya village, Salam subdistrict, on Monday night, cutting off the Magelang-Yogyakarta highway at Kilometer 23 for almost 18 hours until about 1 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

With 20 millimeter-per-hour rainfall, lahar overflowing becomes highly probable, Subandrio, the head of the Volcano Investigation and Technology Development Institution, explained. The cold lava can run down the mountain slopes around 100 kilometers per hour (60 miles per hour), threatening the lives of anyone in its way.

In addition, officials said six bridges had been destroyed and a police office was heavily damaged in the Sleman district. The most affected by the seasonal rainfall are the poorer social sectors that live on the edges of Yogyakarta's rivers. However, no casualties have been reported.

cold lava! at 100kph!

Just a daily example of the nations inability to understand the simplest of concepts

A lahar is mud, rocks, water and sometimes trees, but no one calls it cold lava. And it falls off of a volcano it doesn't come out of a volcano.
