andyfletch
Nice one taxexile - you've managed to add one that the others haven't - The Who, How about a few more: 1) Talking Heads 2) Jethro Tull 3)Elvis Costello 4) Ian Dury and the Blockheads 5) Wishbone Ash 6) Gillan 7) Rainbow 8) Michael Schenker 9) Hawkwind 10) Blackfoot There's only 10 there, but the rest has already been said. Seems to be a general consensus that musically TV is not into much after the end of the 80's !!!!!!

jayenram
OK, I've got bugger all else to do whilst they fit the windows: As usual, no order (but only bands) Van Morrison (and the Caledonia Soul Orchestra). Cream Pink Floyd Fairport Convention Ten Years After Colosseum (preferably with Farlow) Blood Sweat & Tears (preferable with D.C.T.) Beatles (from Sgt. Pepper onwards) The Who Santana Fleetword Mac (anytime between the startup and Stevie Niks' departure) The Strawbs Vanilla Fudge Clannad The Chieftains The Kinks Uriah Heep Yes Jethro Tull John Mayall's Bluebreakers (before "Laurel Canyon") And a few others who didn't quite make my top twenty: Rolling Stones (don't know why not) Meat Loaf King Crimson Edgar Broughton Band Chicken Shack Steve Miller Band Love Jefferson Airplane (they should be in the top 20 if only for "White Rabbit") Blodwyn Pig Captain Beefheart Amen Corner Mott the Hoople Dire Straits Graham Bond Organisation Hawkwind Black Sabbath Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young Procul Harem Traffic I did like a few of the "Motown" bands of the sixties also. Mods please fell free to move this as it's probably in the wrong section. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The dude ranks the Lemon Song very very high on his list of favorite tunes. This tune must be played on high volume to be truly enjoyed. I will go along with the following bands in your list. in no particular order 1. Zep (Lemon, Babe I'm gonna Leave You, That's the Way, Tangerine, Stairway, Custard Pie, etc) 2. Stones ('64-'76) Satisfaction to Memory Motel. You can throw in "Some Girls" and Emotional Rescue and even a few tracks on Tattoo You but after that it was straight downhill 3. Skynyrd We have total agreement on this one. Nothing short of greatness 4. Petty....No agreement on this being near top but '78-'81 was good material. After that was a downer. ###### the Torpedos was Petty's peak. Hard Promises ('81) was ok follow up 5. Cream very solid but not around long enough to make it in top 20 6. Van Halen not in list or close Great 1st album. abrupt decline thereafter ('78 1st LP self titled) 7. Dylan can make my list anytime even if only for his outstanding songwriting 8. ZZ Top was a great rockin' Band from Texas in the 70s. Fandango is a great showcase of how powerful they were live (Tush, Mexican Blackbird etc). Doesn't make a top 20 though. They really hit rock bottom selling out to comerciality with advent of MTV in the early 80s. Legs just don't cut it 9. Police.....Sorry, not close. short lived as Sting went solo. had some poppy hits that were "ok" 10. Beatles....Absolutely deserving of any top list 11. Jeff Buckley....who? 12. Floyd.......shoe-in 13. Rush.....I'll put em there. great 3 man band with awesome material 14. Pearl Jam....No Sorry. no can do 15. Fleetwood Mac. Up for consideration 16. Hendrix....sure, why not? 17. Chili Peppers.....Not a chance, sorry..worst on list so far 18. UFO .....Didn't think they had that much material. this is a top 20 all time list. while not that familiar, I don't think they make such an exclusive list. Lights Out is great song 19. Black Crowes....top 20? no sorry 20. Fun Loving Crims....who? My Adds 1. Beach Boys ('62-'71) 2. Supertramp ('73-'83) 3. Doors ('67-'71) 4. Rascals ('65-'69) 5. Raspberries ('71-'74) 6. Bread (69-'74) 7. Marshall Tucker Band ('73-'80) 8. Stylistics 9. Chicago .....not possible to leave these dudes out 10. Allman Bros ...worthy I think 11. Black Sabbath.....I mean come on man 12. Bob Seger.....absolutely 13. Crosby, Stills, Nash Young and any and all pieces surely 14. Doobies 15. Eagles 16. earth Wind and Fire 17. Clapton (inc Cream, derrick dominoes etc) 18. Elton John 19. Elvis 20. Tull, Moodys, Simon & G, 3 dog night, Rod Stewart, Guess Who, The Who, Steve Miller Good Thread, good choices

jayenram
7. Dylan can make my list anytime even if only for his outstanding songwriting16. Hendrix....sure, why not? 19. Elvis <{POST_SNAPBACK}> If we were talking solo artists, Dylan would have definitely been top of my list, but we weren't. Hendrix and Elvis would also be there along with S & G but I don't consider them bands as such. I'd also put Leonard Cohen in as a solo artist. And probably many more. chonabot
Hendrix would make it into band genre as he was with The Experience and The Band of Gypsies. Without the likes of Mitch Mitchell, Buddy Miles, Noel Redding et al , I doubt those tracks would have swung quite so well. As a lead guitarist myself I never underestimate the influence of a great Rythym section. Next ?
