Thai Travelling In The Eu

Recommended Posts

I am only saying that.. that is what is stated on the website. I quoted the source. It ain't my own experience. Everyone knows we cannot easily go to Europe. Again, use it to get some idea and check the Embassies if it's all correct. Simple.

I believe u. For me - doesn't metter, but for Thai people it can be interesting :o As I wrote, Hungary is EU member (but without Shengen rules yet).

I was searching for which country my Thai G/F could visit on her passport but without a visa. (I am still unsure if we can go to Cambodia next month or not just by arriving at the airport)

Anyway, i found the above quote. It suddenly made me wonder this. If i wanted to go on a Grand Tour of Europe, would my Thai G/f need separate visa's for each country? Lets say i flew to Hungary without a visa for her (I am a UK passport holder so no problems for me), then we take the train/bus and generally travel overland and cross a number of borders where, i believe, in the EU you are unlikely to get asked for your passport. Then we take the extremely busy ferry from Calais to Dover, where, presumably we would also be unlucky to get asked for our passport. We could then have a nice trundle round England without all the hassle of going to Bangkok for an interview.

We live in the south of Thailand. I work as a teacher. Do you know how inconvenient it is for us to get to Bangkok to attend a meeting during business hours!

anyone got any thoughts.

1) YOU CAN GO HONG KONG, SRILANKA AND GET PORT ARRIVEL VISA.

I DON’T KNOW OTHER COUNTERIES BUT THERE ARE MANY.I HAD ONLY TRAVELED THIS TWO COUNTERIES BY PORT ARRIVEL VISA.

2) IF SHE GETS A SHENZIN VISA SHE CAN TRAVEL GERMANY, FRANCE, ITALY, HOLLAND, DENMARK, BELGIUM, SPAIN ALL SHENZIN COUNTRIES.

3) BUT FOR YOUR GIRL FRIEND SHE MUST NEED A VISA FOR HUNGARY AND YOU CANT TRAVEL HUNGARY BY A SHENZIN VISA YOU NEED A SEPARATE VISA FOR HUNGARY. AND APERTFROM MY EXPERIENCE IN TRAVELLING WITH SHENZIN VISA AND HUNGARY VISA I TELL YOU FOR HUNGARY VISA REQUIRMENTS ARE MORE COMPLICATED THEN SHENZIN.(My personal opinion from my case)

You are joking, I hope! :o

There is zero possibility of your GF getting into the UK, via Dover or any other port of entry, without at least a tourist visa. Don't even think about trying it - you and she would be wasting your time.

As already mentioned, the UK is not a Schengen signatory. As a consequence, your g/f would be presented to an immigration officer upon arrival at Dover and, without a visa, be refused leave to enter. Indeed, it is likely that she wouldn't even get that far, as the carriers are liable to a £2000.00 charge for allowing improperly documented passengers to get on the aeroplane/vessel in the first place.

Nice idea, but I'm afraid it's a non-starter.

Scouse.

EU visa is quite easy...q schengen visa applies to all Schengen Countries... , all other European countries requires individual visas...

This isnt the experience I had when trying to get one for my wife. Where did you go?

To the OP, the only countries I know of off-hand that Thais can visit without a visa beforehand are Hong Kong (not really a country), South Korea, Philippines, Singapore and Brazil. There are probably a few more but I haven't heard about them. Check that website I sent you to find info for each country. It's very easy to navigate.

Lopburiguy,

If you are married to a Thai and live in the UK, your wife should be able to get a free family permit to visit other EU/EEA countries. I say "should" because some countries don't play by the rules.

Scouse.

OK thanks Scouser,

I will bear it in mind for the future. Probably come for more advice when the time comes!

Thanks for the information.

I was actually looking for both of us going to Cambodia. That website says we both need to pay 20 US dollars. Can that be right? (I am UK passport holder and she is a Thai passport holder)

(However, visa can be obtained on arrival, if coming for:

- touristic purposes for a stay of max. 1 month.

Fee: USD 20,- and one passport photo;)

A Thai citizen on a normal Thai passport has to pay 20 dollars to get into Cambodia - i dunno, it just doesnt seem correct to me somehow. particularly when a Cambodian travelling into Thailand doesnt have to pay,

Entry may be refused if of "hippy" appearance.

For more information see: For details, click here .

Can anyone throw any light on if my Thai g/f has to pay the 20 dollars?

As far as I am aware after doing many visa runs myself, the thai g/f doesnt have to pay anything. You will have to pay 1000 baht plus 100 for a photo if you dont have one. Other than that nothing at all. I think that gives you a 1 month stay. Hope this helps.

Bang..........

The Cambo's are pretty linient on letting Thai's though on 'Casino runs'. Normally an ID card is fine for this. However, to go any further into the country, the standard rules and costs apply.

  • 3 weeks later...

Cambodia: if you fly into Siem Riep or Phnom Penh, yes your Thai gf needs to pay $20 for a visa. Crossing the border at Proipred(sp?) is another story.

If you wanna do a grand tour over Europe, chances are she will need multiple visas for the Schengen which sometimes is more difficult than a single one, usually French Embassy doesn't really ask any question. I always got multiple one when I asked for. But I asked for multiple one from Swedish Embassy, they did ask a lot of questions. I planned to get to Latvia and Poland on seperate trips so I needed multiple ones, they wrote my reasons down on my application. I only got 2 entries at the end.

Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic are quite easy to get though but each one takes about a week so it will surely eat up a lot of your time. I haven't been to these 3 countries myself yet so I have no first hand info but I talked to a close friend who chose to go to these countries as her first time travelling abroad, very clean passport, only had 5 digits money in her bank account, she got all of them with no hassle.

I don't think many Thai people would appreciate such a destination but I can strongly recommend Uganda, very friendly people, lots of things to see. I got my visa on arrival at the airport, took about 30 seconds.

The French embassy in Bangkok.

Put "Schengen Visa" into search for lots of information.

Thought I would just take her to france, so why bother with Schengen - surely it would be quicker to just apply to the French Embassy - the question is can I go to the French Embassy in London once she has a tourist visa for the UK and is with me in the UK. This would be better as Just in case we do not go, then no need to pay for another visa and spend uneccessary time applying for it.

If your girl gets a UK visa it will be a bloody miracle........

The French embassy will only process visas for people resident in the UK, and will need to see that proof of residence, usually, a long term visa for the UK stamped into her passport. If your GF turns up with a tourist visa, they won’t accept her application, so you’ll have to apply for it in Bangers.

Now that is what I call an answer - thanks.

JUst a pointer - France is one of the tougher Schengen countries to get a visa for. I have friends resident in the UK who are non-EU nationals and they have to provide proof of accomodation even when they are visiting friends - i.e they need letters of invitation from a French resident - these applicants are people who live and work in the UK and are legally resident so I can imagine how much tougher it will be for non - Eu residents regardless of the nationality of their boyfriends.

Spain, Holland and Germany to compare have only asked to see peoples UK Residency proof and a return ticket (whihc is all France should do -as these people are all married to Brits).

Might be worht considering how tough a Schengen visa would be to get from the Frenchh Embassy - you can get a visa from all the other Schengen embassies that wil allow you entry to France.

I have known people to apply to Greece for a visa (it seemed to be handing them out like sweeties for a while - maybe they thought they were all going to be filling the Stadiums for the Olympics!!!) and then never went to Greece, but went to other Schengen countries!!!

Oh and come on - when did you last travel throgh Europe and not get asked for a passport - went euro railing over Christmas and yes sometimes they don't but getting from Hungary to Dover withouth a check - no way as you cross a Schengan border!!!

As for getting into UK without a visa - well I think it has already been spelled out you have better chance of winning the lottery twice in the same night!!!

I was in same scenario as you last year, GF had UK visit visa, after receiving the UK visa I suggested to her to make a visit to the French Embassy and apply for a visit visa for France so that we could travel to Paris.

At the French Embassy they asked her a couple of questions, when they saw the UK visa in her passport they were all smiles and a 2 week French visit visa was issued to her there & then. If you only want to visit France then just get a French visa and your done & dusted.

The visa was marked as " ETATS SCHENGEN ". In theory I suppose its not a " French visa " however you can go to thier Embassy for the Schengen visa ?

Best regards
