What exactly does this receiver do?

It's a USB to WiFi adapter, only particularly unique thing about it is it's compatible with BackTrack etc, for network uhm... integrity testing.

it's useful for "testing network integrity" true, but it also boosts the amount of bars on the net reception, usually by about one or two (with 100% strength being 5 bars). It really can make all the difference between being able to connect and surf and not sometimes - my laptop has wireless N and some guesthouse signals go from 0-1 bar to 3-4 - that's when it's critical to have the thing.

Hahaha!

Maybe I could slap that bumper sticker on my motorbike - pretty tough to balance the laptop and drive it at the same time, but I've seen more ambitious rig-ups here.

I use to have the same problem until I converted my bike :D
