Indonesia to block Blackberry browsing if provider fails to filter porn

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- Indonesia's communication ministry is threatening to block Blackberry internet browsing capabilities if pornographic internet content is not filtered out by Canadian tech company Research in Motion (RIM) in the coming week, local media reported on Tuesday.

Indonesia's Communications and Information Technology Ministry (CITM) said RIM will have until January 17 to prove its filtering capability, stressing that pornographic material could be easily accessed through Blackberry cell phones.

CITM's information and public relations chief Gatot S. Dewa Broto said that if RIM does not comply with the regulations, browsing capabilities will be blocked. With approximately 2.5 million Blackberry users in Indonesia, the blocking would have a severe financial impact.

On Monday, RIM, which is based in Waterloo, Ontario, announced that it would be complying with Indonesian regulations and confirmed its commitment to working with Indonesian carriers "to put in place a prompt, compliant filtering solution for BlackBerry subscribers in Indonesia as soon as possible."

Since 2008, Indonesia has enacted a strict anti-pornography law.
