Phuket Governor launches night venue crackdown

PHUKET: -- The Phuket Governor has warned entertainment venues to abide by the law – or suffer the consequences.

The warning from Governor Tri Augkaradacha comes after officers from the Phuket Provincial Office and Muang District Office teamed up to raid popular nightspots across the district last week.

Muang District covers Phuket Town and surrounding sub-districts, running all the way south to Rawai and Nai Harn at the southernmost tip of the island. It also includes Kata and Karon.

The crackdown also follows Gov Tri receiving an Interior Ministry order instructing him to target entertainment venues operating without appropriate licenses and staying open past midnight.

Thus far 12 venues have been caught breaking the law: two for late trading and the remaining 10 for trading without any licenses at all, said the governor.

All 12 will be reported with recommendations for further legal action, he added.

The on-going crackdown will first target venues that residents have lodged complaints about for a long time.

They will also target venues that remain open until early morning, he added.

"The crackdown may have a slight effect on the business owners, but it is about justice – everyone will get the same treatment," he said.

In Udon province they have a planning office, 1-you register with the local head village, 2 get licences from the municipality (town) 3 Udon for the main trading licence to operate only when photos are supplied of the premises, and its not near residential areas, (music/Karaoke) 4 tax to be paid at the town and registered. Now are they saying (10 businesses) dont have, and have been operating for some time.....had Phuket admin had done their work properly then the business would never have been able to open. Why for h--l sake do they advertise a crackdown. if they have the manpower for this then they have it to prevent businesses opening without licences in the first place.

Never forget TIT! I suspect they were allowed to operate unhindered without the necessary licence because money changed hands and the owners paid their protection money. Of course, that is only a suspicion.

It also can be like it happens here all the time.

For example, about 15 yeras ago a friend of mine had a bar in Pattaya when someone had the briliant idea that you needed a license for the pool table.

So my friend went to soi 9 to get a license, only to receive the reply that there were no licenses available.so what do I do then was his question,to which he got the reply....................you pay us 300 baht a month and then you will not need a license.

You can understand that at time every bar was operating a pool table illegal however they paid money for it each month.

Venues closing at midnight? Won't be many tourists left.....................

But they'll get a good night's sleep.

The bars in question, really annoyed some of the neighbours. They are in places where bars shouldn't really be operating at those hours.

There is 1 bar in Patong on Bangla that has a rooftop bar. Sometimes It blares loud noise long after the time period. It is adjacent to 1 major resort and several smaller hotels and guesthouses. Each of those businesses has received angry complaints from guests and multiple negative reviews on travel websites like tripadviser warning of the noise. 1 bar serving maybe 20 people a night disrupts businesses that serve hundreds. Some bar owners really push the envelope. People know there will be noise coming off Bangla. What they are not expecting are loud elevated speakers that project the noise away from Bangla into non bar areas. This one bar has caused many visitors to blame the decent bar owners, the hotels and other venues for something beyond their control. It is a case of absolute selfishness from one establishment. This establishment like so many others in Patong is so far untouched by the authorities. The refusal to enforce the closing and noise laws is unfair to those businesses that respect the laws and gives an unfair advantage to a business that thumbs its nose at everyone else.

maybe thats the long range plan ( if there is such a thing as long range plan in Thailand) well rested tourists spending money during the day time,

I look forward to a crackdown on many of the daytime enterprises like the tuktuks, motor sai and jet skis. One lives in hope, but little expectation.

This just reflects clearing out of those who won't pay off those offering to allow them to keep trading. Not much of a crackdown really and of course, to be expected.

Patrons of these kind of establishments come to Thailand to party, and spend far more in the night than they ever possibly could or would care to during the day. I would say, that making these kind of tourists leave, may make a fe "good" tourists come, though the overall balanec sheet would shrink. These kind of tourists also spend, but in another form. They dont buy "I love bangkok" shirts, or laptop computers. They already have those. They came back to Thailand because it is one of the best places in the world to party at a good price. Trying to remove the party atmosphere from one of the places some Farangs (not including myself by any means btw) like to visit can;t be a constructive thing for tourism, or for the Thai balance sheet.

That is just the standard way to business here. In other countries in big cities they pay protection to the mafia here to the police. SAMO SAMO!!!

have to agree, all I can say is crack downs crack me up, cuurent crack downs in BKK, on street people, on drugs, on noise. on young kids, on not wearing a helmet for bike, on bus drivr[ers and mini bus drivers, on fake red plates, on putting police flashing lights and signs on you car it goes on and on, why the media even report on the crack downs beats me.

CMON guys... anyone that lives here knows the answer to all this....

nothing will change... u can duck and weave but one will hit u eventually...

Has this crackdown been recycled from 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 or 2010, or is this something new?

Probably another "bright" idea from American DEA consultants. Crackdown this and War on That. And the jails will be overcrowded and crime still pays. They should not listen those idiots.
