Powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake strikes Pakistan

2011-01-19 04:47:44 GMT+7 (ICT)

PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A powerful earthquake rocked a desert area in southwestern Pakistan on early Wednesday morning, seismologists said, but few details were immediately available.

The 7.2-magnitude earthquake at 1.23 a.m. local time (2023 GMT Tuesday) struck about 45 kilometer (30 miles) west of Dalbandin, a town in Balochistan province. It struck about 84 kilometers (52.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The agency estimated that some 109,000 people may have felt strong shaking, which could potentially result in moderate to heavy damage. Some 3.8 million others may have felt light to strong shaking.

It was not immediately clear if there were any casualties as a result of the earthquake, but local media reported that at least three people were injured when the roof of a house collapsed in Dadu.

On October 8, 2005, more than 79,000 people were killed and more than 100,000 others were injured when a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake rocked Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in modern history.
