The Airports Authority of Thailand yesterday approved a Bt4-bilion budget to compensate residents living near Suvarnabhumi airport who have been affected by excessive noise from passenger jets' engines during take-offs and landings.

The approval has repotedly been influenced by a sit-in protest by around 200 residents at a gate to the departure terminal of the airport since Thursday night, the latest effort in several rallies to hasten the AOT's delayed process to give compensation to them.

The protestors met with senior AOT leadership and reached an agreement that they would seek urgent approval of the money for compensatory payments. The AOT has pledged to give unpaid amount to the residents but the time-consuming process has angered those affected.

The airport spokesperson, Wilaiwan Nadwilai, said the payment process would be sped up at the amount agreed on earlier, after the approval was given yesterday in a meeting of directors of AOT executive board.

The announcement of the approval drove the sit-in protestors to unleashing loud cheers and laughters at the airport. They vowed to later disperse, after making a further seven-point demand to their benefits.

Among the demands are speedy payment process, and crucially, the delay of a planned project to expand the airport terminal areas in the next phase, until after all afffected residents receive compensatory payments.

In addition to smaller amounts previously agreed on with or partially paid to affected residents, the Bt4,088 million would be paid to owners of 6,317 homes of buildings located in a so-called Noise Exposure Forecast (NEF) zone, and to owners of another 107 buildings who suffer from louder noise in another NEF zone.

Or they could spend it on sound deadening materials, double glaze, triple glaze glass, but I can't see that happening.

so each home owner will get 636,624 THB ?????? .. awfully nice of them

It will cover moving expenses.

But it won't cover buying a new house.

I wonder how long a lot of these people have lived there, compared to how long the airport has been planned.

Most of the people complaining bought land out there while the airport was under construction. They just wanted to cash in on land that they thought would skyrocket in price when the airport was completed. However, they were ignorant as well as greedy... They forgot that airports are noisy.

And what source is that opinion taken from??

And what about the others - the ones you consider to be a minority? Are they also the undeserving.

Your post is reactionary, and shows you know nothing, feel nothing and have no desire to change that.

Do some research and find out the facts.

I will not waste any more time on you.

From my perspective - the facts - my family has had the land for well over 30 years as have many living here almost directly under the flightpath.

We built the house 24 years ago intending to retire here.

It was a dream house for my 85 year old bed ridden Mum in law until the noise started.

She now puts up with with take off noise that prevents any conversation and flights that shake the house at ALL hours of the day AND night.

We would be with her full time if it wasn't for the noise, but WE have a choice even if it is limited to staying in Blighty.
