Pocket Wifi Huewei E585 - Works With Dtac Edge?

Recommended Posts

Hi

Im thinking about getting an unlocked pocket wifi gadget. The specs say it is backwards compatible with EDGE. But I am just wondering if anyone here has got it to work with DTAC?

I wanted to get the pocket wifi because i use a mac and ive only got 2 usb sockets and dont want to use them for my internet.. and apple bluetooth is notoriously unreliable so i dont want to bluetooth to a phone modem

Thanks

Specs say it supports GSM 1800 (along with GSM850/900/1900) so yes, it would work with DTAC's GPRS/EDGE network. It would not work on DTAC's 3G network (small now but expanding soon), which uses 850 MHz for 3G (as does Truemove). Since it supports 2100 MHZ 3G it would work with TOT's 3G network, available from TOT or one of its resellers (e.g.: i-Kool, iMobile).

FWIW if you have an iPhone or an Android phone you could do the same thing, aka "tethering". Connect a PC to the phone via WiFi and utilize the mobile broadband connection.

Hi,

I have one of these and it works fine with True 3G on the 850MHz band, you can check on the settings page. Mine seems to 'idle' on 384kbps (Edge speeds) and goes to 7.2MBps d/l when used in anger. I tried it with a 6 of laptops/ipads/iphones simultaneously and it worked fine. Can't see any reason for it not to work with the DTAC 3G trial.

All the specs I read on the Huawei E585 MiFi Router indicate that it supports:

HSPA/HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS/3G (2100MHz)

GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900MHz)

So there is no way this would work with True or DTAC 3G, both of which use 850 MHz for 3G.

Did you buy a different version of this device? One which supports 3G 850 MHz? If so what are the full specs?

I suspect that if you are on True you are really only getting 2G, that is to say EDGE or GPRS on GSM. The fact that you are seeing 384 Kbps and 7.2 Mbps exactly leads me to be somewhat skeptical. When I do a speedtest, from an Android phone, I see figures like 3.576 Mbps Down and 418 Kbps up.

Yep, I know what the specs say, but I went into Banana IT, and they let me try it.. it worked... I have attached a screenshot of the connection page clearly showing it at 7.2/5.76Mbps.

Not done a speedtest yet, but will try later today.

OK, now I can see, from your menu bar, that you have a True-locked/branded MiFi device which supports:

HSPA/UMTS 2100/1900/850 MHz

GSM/GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900 MHz

This True MiFi Router is different from the E585. I was definitely confused.

It is a nice device. Can I ask the price? Which True data package do you use? Is it "locked" so that you cannot use it with another provider? If so, can it be unlocked?

I didn't know True were flogging these now, it's the same box just with their logo on it not Huawei. My E585 is not from True and not locked to any provider like the one in the link... The one I bought is an 'off the shelf' E585 from Banana IT and it comes with a TOT 3G card pre-installed, the shop used a DTAC card to show edge and I use a True sim card for 3G. I paid 4,500 Baht for it and it's on the 599 Baht package with so called 'unlimited' 3G from True which actally gives unlimited 7.2Mbps and not the 7.2Mbps for 3/5Gb and the rest at 256kbps like the new packages (bought the sim card for my old iphone 3GS)

I think lots of companies are getting on the bandwagon with mifi, '3' in the UK already do these locked...

The other thing I noticed is that the True box can only have 5 connections, mine is set up for a default of 100 (not that I need that many).

Are there any other mifi devices available in Thailand or just the Huawei?

After even more research I think your unit may be a Huawei E5836S? This appears to be the unit that True have re-branded, and that others are re-selling with the Huawei label. (Sometimes I see the E5836S called an E5S.)

http://3g.vivaonline.biz/products-page/huawei/mifi-true-3g-huawei-e5836s/

Features Mifi Huawei E5836s.

Operating frequency (3G): HSUPA / HSDPA / UMTS 2100/1900/850 MHz.

Camp is now True 3G, Dtac 3G, TOT3G and Support for all camps will auction concessions in the future.

Operating frequency (2G): GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz.

2G for all camps in Thailand, AIS, Dtac and True Move.

Speed: HSUPA 5.76Mbps; HSDPA 7.2Mbps.

I still can't find a single reference to a Huawei E585 supporting 3G/850 MHz.

edited to add: I wonder who added the local content (SCBeasy, KTB, etc.) to the Huawei UI?

Ok, I just did something sensible and popped the back off and looked at the info inside... My apologies, mine is actually a E5836 (not the 'S' model). Has the same 4 lights in a square as the True model on their website. The 'S' model seems to have a better display (looks more like a phone) with signal strength and operator
