I wonder what map the Besta GPS Learner 3 uses.

I bought a GPS from a Guy advertising here on TV classifieds. 2500 baht. It works fine. Also shows a lot of unnamed dirt tracks which is far more than I expected. be useful when out on the motorbike for sure. Software is IGO primo. with built in MP3 player its a bargain

How do you mount it on the bike Jubbs?

You got a charger hooked up to the battery as well?

I saw earlier in this thread someone suggesting using the suction pad on the fuel tank! That doesn't sound too good to me! :) May stick to glass quite well but I doubt it would hold for too long on a metal tank!

Its in my pocket for now, get it out when necessary. When I'm lost or something ;-)

I will probably 'cable tie' it to the top of the seat somehow.

very versatile those 'Cable Ties' :)

ah ok, I was thinking you could mount it on the handle bars or something. I might have a look at getting one when I'm over next :)

I have a Nokia phone with GPS in it and it works great with English Language and no need to connect to the internet or telephone and no annual bill to up date.

Cool. What model do you have? And how much did it cost?

Have a look at www.ankaka.com. They are in Singapore, have biought things from them and they seem to be reliable. They have inexpensive GPS.

I agree with some of the startup problems with the entry level nuvi. Mine is a 1250, I use it quite a bit. Many may not want to do this stuff, but here have been my solutions.

-I turn it on before I go out and plan to use it, and place it on my balcony. Once it has locked in, even if you change locations, it will be good about locking in for the day after that.

-If i'm already out and it hasn't locked in yet, the key is to stay still. I know some people will scoff at that, but it kinda needs it if you are under the bts etc (if you are in the open with no buildings it will lock no matter what of course). Once locked in I actually feel it does a good job of staying locked. The accuracy may not be stellar, but it does well.

-Understand the satellite strength screen. On my model is accessed by pressing the bars indicator top left. This takes you to a screen that shows you your satellites. It's cool, if you orient yourself right and know which way is North, you can actually see it will be picking up satellites from the direction there are no buildings. Anyway.... the blue bars indicate strength on mine, and a blue bar with a hollow line in the middle means strength but not "locked" yet. So if you see 2 solid bars then you know you are close because it needs at least 3. A solid bar in essence would mean the gps knows how far you are from the satellite, just needs more data to pinpoint your location. So point... understanding that screen helps me. Ha, long-winded.

I have often thought a great tool would be an option to tell the gps exactly where you are when it is locking in. That seems like a needed function that would be very helpful.

If you are in Bangkok and continually under the BTS or elevated roadways you may want to use a smartphone with assisted GPS.

Thank you. I'm sure that would work great. I'm not into the monthly bill aspect of it however. I really don't need it much is the truth, but when i do i use those guidelines above. Thanks again.
