Have 6Mb True Internet Package -Is It Transferable If I Move To Condo With Tot Landline?

This does seem an obvious question, but I'll ask anyway. I have a True internet package on a 1-year contract (the 6MB 590B a month one). I'm in Bangkok , Suk area. Connection works astoundingly well for torrents, with download speeds of 6-700kB/s routinely for well seeded torrents. I didn't even need to port forward, I just plugged the router modem into my telephone splitter and got green NAT (on Vuze) instantly! I use torrents for pretty much my entire source of entertainment (movies, UK, and US TV) and couldn't bear to go back to the 10-50kB/s I got in Phuket (admittedly this was on hotel WiFi via maxnet).

However 6 months into the contract I find I have to move to a new condo. I was naive enough not to realise before that the telephone landlines to buildings are provided either entirely by True or entirely by TOT, but now I do....

I want to avoid breaking my contract with True and having to pay the cancellation fee (either 1000 or 5000B depending on who and when you ask), but more importantly, I don't want to change providers in case the torrent speeds become unacceptably low, especially as I have read here that TOT routinely throttle torrents.

So my question is, if I move to a TOT landline building, will it be impossible for True to continue to supply my internet service? Common sense tells me that of course this would be the case, but TiT and sometimes the obvious doesn't turn out to be correct.

And as a supplementary, if I did change to TOT (it would be between Sukhumvit and Rama 9, if the area is important), could I get similarly good torrent speeds, so don't need to worry about changing providers?

I'm a TV addict so the answer to this will be one of the most important considerations in choosing my new place!

Thanks for any input, advice.

cheers

Short answer: Yes.

There's no guarantee. You'd have to actually use the service to find out. But don't get your hopes up, it's TOT after all.

I wish I could say the same... I just got hooked up with the 8MB package from TRUE. All is well, except I get the feeling that there's some form of P2P traffic-shaping going on. Torrent downloads rarely exceed 30-40KB/s. As soon as downloads pick up speed, those fast peers/seeders (with transfer rates in excess of 50KB/s) get "cut off" after a few seconds, or so it seems. I never had any problems with my previous ISP.

One more thing... I find it extremely difficult to access ThaiVisa with TRUE. Again, no problems with my old ISP. Only after configuring the browser to use TRUE proxy server do things return to normal.

This is something you would have to discuss with True support. I have the True 6Mb package in my condo (but in Pattaya) even though the lines are supplied by TOT - I'm actually running it through the in-house switchboard to the room phone. I also have a TT&T direct line (a relic from my 3BB days) but this is not supported by True. No problems using utorrent here and am getting pretty much the speeds you have, though this wasn't always the case as I had to resort to using Vuze with maximum encryption for a couple of months last year.

Aha ! This is pretty interesting, thanks. So it might be possible even with a TOT line. I'll ask them again at True, as I got a rather ambiguous answer. True said see if your building will allow you to install a True line, building said you can't have True phone line installed but many people here have True wireless, but they couldn't tell me exactly how...obviously I will need to have many more conversations of ever increasing confusion, but seems like the possibility exists at least..

It will all depend on if True services the area/building you are moving to. In some cases even if only one phone company services an area for telephone and internet service, a competing company can still string an "internet" line to you (no phone service on the line) if the moobaan or building allow the line to be strung. In other cases a competing company can string a phone and internet line to you.

Phone and interent service is still very territorial in Thailand, but living in a city increases you changes of being able to select between TOT, True, 3B or others. For me here in my western Bangkok moobaan I've been a captive audience to TOT (or one of their concessionaire ISPs) since TOT owns the lines. But True is stringing lines in the moobaan as we speak so I will soon have a choice. I'm on the TOT 6Mb plan (fastest TOT plan available to my moobaan) and I get 5.3Mb speedtest results to "in-Thailand" sites, 1 to 2Mb results to international web sites, and when using a download manager I get file download speeds in the 3 to 4Mb range. The plan as been very reliable (99% plus) and just fine for general browsing, emailing, file downloads (I don't do the torrent thing), but when it comes to video streaming its not very good as.I usually get a lot of pausing.

Maybe the people you mention using True wireless are tapping into a True Wifi hotspot in the area.

hi there

just a bit information here. TOT is the infrastructure network provider, meaning they own the cables ( hanging in the air ). TRUE could lease % of these infrastructure, then TRUE could provide limited services in the TOT territory. call TRUE with exact address and they would confirm.

I am in the north of Bangkok. 6 months before we moved in, we 'booked' a TRUE landline and internet services, since the quota runs out fast. very inflexibility.

thought, the TRUE internet services not always as stable as smooth everywhere ! highly depends on your connection point to their switching ( via TOT cables or True cables ) and type of switching equipments they installed ( from very new to very old ).

start a basic 6mb service plan and if alright then upgrade to 8mb. they do offer 8mb service in the area that only a 6mb switching installed :-)

In my case I did contact True before signing up...no can do for our area since TOT owned the lines and apparently True did not lease a percentage nor string in lines....just an answer of now but maybe in the future. I even checked again about a year later and still the same answer...they don't service my area/moobaan. Don't know of any other people in my moobaan having True phone/internet service...never, ever saw a repair truck in my moobaan other than TOT. But True is stringing lines (hanging them right below the TOT lines) as wee speak, so soon I will have choice. The people stringing the lines even said True will have a sale/promotion within the moobaan as soon as they are up and running. It will probably be the same promotion as on their web site/in True shops, but maybe, just maybe, they'll offer something at little better pricewise since it will be their best chance to wave their flag in the moobaan so to speak and steal away customers from TOT. And with competition now in the moobaan, I wouldn't be surprised to see TOT "magically" upgrade their internet service to something faster than 6Mb in order to keep customers. Fortunately, I'm less than two months away from my 12 month contract being up with TOT, so True is arriving at a good time for me. Cheers.
