Thousands of protesters urge Yemeni President Saleh to resign

2011-01-28 07:32:20 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Yemen's capital Sanaa on Thursday to protest economic policies and urge the ouster of the regime which is led by incumbent President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Protesters carried banners reading "no to povertization policy" and "the time has come for change," while others chanted slogans urging the opposition to move for change.
The opposition rallies also condemned corruption, the extension of the presidential term, and the ruling of one family.

The rallies were held at four separate locations, including one at Sanaa University.

A pro-government rally was also organized but with fewer demonstrators, who chanted support for President Saleh. Protesters urged people to stand by the government to fight corruption and destabilization.

Anti-riot police with batons and police cars were deployed to the streets in an effort to contain any potential clashes. However, there were no reports of serious violence.

Yemen has been witnessing protests since the demonstrations in Tunisia ousted president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, ending his 23 years in power. Similar protests have erupted in Egypt in an effort to oust President Muhammad Hosni Mubarak.

On Sunday, Yemeni police arrested a female rights activist for organizing anti-government protests in the capital last week.

God to see so many of these hideous facist regimes wobbling. Unfortunately so many of them are supported by and armed by our own governments which is scandalous

Unfortunately there is a not so small chance that it becomes worse. 'Worse' in a sense when you would judge it with a western viewpoint.

Anyway there is also probably no doubt that this opposition forces or the "new power" will have some support by western governments. sometimes open sometimes secret, only to figure later out that it was all a fatal mistake. History is full with such examples.

people who have a political understanding will easily see that those governments were the BEST thing that could happen to have a certain stability in the region.

Islamic Extremists will be more than happy to fill the vacuum. I guess, now even those people without any understanding of world-politics won't need any further elaboration.

If many of those un-democratic governments fall, we will have not only one or two Afghanistans or Pakistans, but PLENTY of them !

Exactly. The religious fascists that take their place will not be any better and even less free.
