Mexico's winter season causes at least 22 deaths

MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Mexico's Health Department on Sunday said that at least 22 people have died due to the low temperatures in the current winter season.

According to the report - which covers the time period between October 21, 2010 and January 26 - 18 of the 22 deaths occurred in the northern state of Chihuahua, while the states of Puebla and Coahuila reported 2 deaths each.

The department also urged citizens to take basic preventive measures, such as a daily intake of a balanced diet that includes vitamin A and C, avoiding quick temperature changes, and to seek medical attention in case of illness, avoiding self-medicated treatment. In addition, it warned of respiratory illnesses, intoxication and burns due to gas-powered heaters, as well as smoking in closed areas near small children, the elderly, and the ill.
