Stranded Thais anxious to get out

Amid the violence and loss of life over the past week in Egypt, Marisa Phiewkhao and other Thais stranded in Cairo saw the airport as a safe haven. Yet, their stress was growing as each minute passed yesterday.

"Food and drink are clearly running out. Explosions are heard from time to time. And there, I can see some passengers and airline staff engaging in fist-fights," Marisa said over the phone to a TV news programme, adding that all passengers wanted to get back home as quickly as possible.

She said some 57 Thais had already moved through immigration counters, but had ended up in the departure area. She had also heard that about another 20 Thais were stranded in front of airline check-in counters.

"The airline employees have given us food. But I had to queue for up to two hours for a box of food," Marisa said.

Dr Udomluck Jenpanich from Phitsanulok's Bhudhashinnaraj Hospital, another stranded passenger, said that until Sunday she had been surviving on chocolate, candy and instant noodles at the airport. "I stocked up on them after finding that hamburgers and other main food items at the airport were no longer available following the chaos," she said.

Her luck changed when the Thai Embassy in Cairo provided proper meals for her and other Thais. Udomluck later on Sunday had a chance to speak to the ambassador at night, briefing him on the situation at the airport.

"At that time, Japanese and Chinese passengers had already flown back to their homelands and Americans were waiting to be flown back on Monday morning, while Thais were still stuck in the airport," she said, complaining that airline staff had not provided much help to her and other passengers waiting for the same flight out of the country.

Both Udomluck and Marisa also said the airport was very cold at night. All passengers have had to sleep on the floor, relying on cardboard given by Egyptian shop owners for makeshift mattresses.

Marisa has had no clothes to change into because she checked her large suitcase in upon arrival.

Udomluck said that toilets at the airport were now very dirty and had run out of tissue.

"Fortunately, I managed to buy a kettle from the duty-free shop and can boil water for me and others to drink," she said.

An official from the Thai Embassy assured Marisa that a special charter flight would be arranged to take Thais back to their homeland, she said, adding, "We are waiting eagerly for the arrival of that flight."

The Foreign Ministry said it had arranged a charter flight for Thais from Cairo to the Jordanian capital, Amman, yesterday. A second flight aboard a Thai Airways aircraft would then take them to Bangkok, where they should arrive today.

But the arrangement was tricky, as the charter flight needed to take off from Egypt before the curfew yesterday, spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said. All Thai nationals in Egypt were now safe and officials from the embassy were standing by at Cairo Airport to help stranded passengers, he said.

Meanwhile, the ministry issued a second warning that Thais should delay travel to Egypt till the situation returns to normal. Those whose visits to the country were essential should exercise great caution as the situation remained highly dangerous, it said.

A chartered flight arrives in Cairo to evacuate Thais : FM

By The Nation

A chartered flight from Jordan arrived in Cairo this morning to evacuate Thais stranded in the country following days of violence, a senior Thai diplomat said Tuesday.

The flight chartered by Thai government will bring Thais who are willing to go home to Amman of Jordan first before boarding a THAI flight back to Bangkok, Foreign Ministry's spokesman Thani Thongpakdi said.

It is reported that some 40 of 80 Thais stuck in the Cairo International Airport registered to go home while the rest, mostly workers, wished to go to Europe and Libya.

The THAI flight is expected to arrive Bangkok at about 2am.

Thani said Public Health Ministry has assigned a medical team, comprising a psychologist, to go with the THAI flight in case the Thais need help.

I am sure they are relieved to be out.

And back home to their own street demonstrations,

that they at least have a clue what's going on about.

I wonder why7 TPN and PAD and/or REDS haven't tried to sue Abhisit

for not helping the Thais in Egypt... oh wait they didn't commit a crime.
