Indonesia and Finland sign renewable energy pact

2011-02-15 07:53:23 GMT+7 (ICT)

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The governments of Indonesia and Finland on Monday signed a bilateral renewable energy pact that would promote the use of wood-based biomass and agricultural residues, the Jakarta Post reported.

The program, which is called Energy and Environment Partnership, is targeted on fighting climate change and reducing greenhouse emissions. The program will be focused in Indonesia's Central Kalimantan and Riau Province just off the coast of Sumatra.

"This program is a manifestation of our commitment to develop the two nations relations through concrete programs," said Ambassador of Finland to Indonesia, Kai Sauer, adding that the program would provide modern, accessible and reliable services in rural areas and industrial applications.

Furthermore, Sauer confirmed that Finland's Foreign Affairs Ministry had approved 4 million euros ($5.4 million) for the project from 2011 until 2014.

The program is also expecting to receive proposals from public and private sectors, as well as universities, research institutions, NGOs, and local groups.
