Black Icon, Red Icon

Why the different color icons in front of each thread. What do they mean?

Also, it is easy to tell when the red one has been read, but the black one always looks the same (even though I guess the white spot is supposed to give it away). I sometimes end up opening the same last post more than once. What is the purpose of these things?

It's black until there have been about 7 or 8 posts. Then it turns to red.

Once you have read the current posts, they both turn a lighter shade of black or red.

edit: there is a "legend" at the bottom of the "topics" page.
