The red-shirt movement will flood the Rajprasong Intersection with 1 million red origami cranes on Saturday.

Nathee Sorawaree, a red-shirt leader, said red-shirt people would gather at the Pathum Wanaram Temple from 10 am to 9 pm to commemorate the deaths of red-shirt protesters.

At 5 pm, the protesters would gather at the Rajprasong Intersection and "release" 1 million red paper cranes.

The birds didn't do any good in 2004 and they won't now, it seems the reds are running out of publicity stunts.

Folding a million paper cranes just to throw them out into the air is a lot of wasted labor that could otherwise be used for something more productive.

Will the folders be paid? Who will be folding the cranes? 500 cheap Burmese workers, making 2000 cranes each?

Or does their 1M value actually mean 100,000 like their proclaimed 1M man march? Nobody is going to be able to count them when they release them, so maybe they are just pretending that there will be 1M in an attempt at extravagance.

The wasted paper is also not beneficial for the environment, especially if they don't use recycled paper.

Now english is a nuanced language and in this case the meaning of "release" is "to set free" and probably is meant to symbolise the the wish of the Red shirts that their compatriots be set free from jail imo. I apologise if english is not your first language and this may not have been clear from the text.

Certainly you are most likely right in terms of it being a symbolic move to release (set free) those jailed but you cannot release (set free) these paper birds. I am not even sure if they glide as would a paper airplane. It is usually more common to use the word "drop" and not release when you are talking about an object that is immediately going to fall to the ground.

I think they would have been better off sticking with the balloons because at least if you let go (release) of a balloon it can float away symbolizing freedom as opposed to dropping (releasing) a folded paper into the filthy streets of Bangkok causing it to now be defined as trash.

Red shirts protest as detention goes on

A group of 30 red shirts yesterday complained about their continued detention, despite the government's pledge to free them pending trial.

"Some 104 red shirts are still in jail facing charges of violating emergency rules even though they should have been released since they are not prime suspects," the group said in an open letter.

Phayao Akhad, representing the group, lodged the letter with the Rights and Liberties Department, which was assigned to expedite bail reviews for the suspects.

Director-general Nongporn Rungphetwong said the department had checked on the needs and conditions of 180 red shirts held in custody, and 151 had sought legal assistance and help applying for bail.

The department had arranged for lawyers and financial sureties but the outcome depended on the charges and legal circumstances of each case, she said.

Those are made of rice paper (not from trees)( and wouldn't be used in origami which you need a stronger paper that will hold the folds. And most Thais don't do the lantern thing ... certainly not in BKK. I believe it is more a Chang Mai thing (aren't there a lot of Reds there .. just giving you a hard time) and for the tourists on the islands. ... though they did use a bunch (a thousand?) as part of an organized festival (I think for the King' Birthday) in BKK last year.
