Introducers break in Indonesian envoy hotel room in South Korea, data could be missing

JAKARTA, INDONESIA (BNO NEWS) -- The Indonesian Foreign Ministry on Sunday confirmed that one of the hotel rooms belonging to Indonesian envoys during a state visit to Seoul, South Korea was broken into.

The country's Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene told the Jakarta Post that unidentified people broke into the Indonesian delegates' hotel room, and even though Korean media had reported that sensitive data belonging to a high-ranking official was missing, the spokesman assured that the laptop had been returned.

Tene did not go into detail regarding what information was contained within the laptop, but he said the Indonesian embassy had already filed a complaint with the hotel management due to the incident.

Initial reports said the stolen data could have been linked to the Indonesian-South Korean KFX fighter jet project in which the Indonesian government would finance 20 percent of the project, around $8 billion. Reports also said data regarding Indonesia's potential purchase of 16 South Korean T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jets was among the possibly stolen files.

Indonesian presidential envoys were on a three-day state visit that started last Tuesday. According to Korean media, three unidentified individuals broke into the envoys' Lotte Hotel room on the 19th floor, and local authorities believed the intruders were able to copy sensitive data from the envoys laptops to USB flash drives

While former director of Indonesia's State Intelligence Agency said the country has failed to adequately protect military data for a long time, reports indicate that no security guards or police officers were monitoring the envoys' rooms during the break-in.
