Hi all,

I'm currently holding a one year multiple entry non immigrant B visa from my old school. I'm now at a new school and they have told me I must go to get another Non immigrant B visa because I cant get the work permit with a visa from my old school. It's seems ridicules, costly and time consuming to do this, and I'm not sure if the school administration always knows what it's talking about. Does anyone know if what the school is telling me that I must go and get a new non im B visa is true?

I appreciate your help.

Regards

Philip

If you multiple entry non-B is still valid and you are not on an extension of stay from immigration, in essence you leave the country every 90 days, you can just apply for a new WP without any problems.

Are you on an extension of stay or do you leave the country every 90 days?

Thanks for your reply.

I'm not on any extension of stay and I never had or applied for a work permit with my previous school. I was and still am quite happy doing the border run every 90 days to Poi pet, but my new school is insisting on me getting a work permit. Which is fair enough, but just seems ridicules that I must go and get a new non im B visa since I already hold a valid one until the end of October.

I'm not on an extension of stay. Just staying here on a NON IM B visa with multiple entries

One other factor - if you are on an extension of stay it ended the day your employment ceased at the old school.

No need to get a new visa then, you are on a valid non-B entry and that is all that is needed to get a WP. The school might be confused with someone being in Thailand on an extension of stay. Than you would have to leave Thailand first. You can apply for a WP without any problems. Once you have a WP you can get an extension of stay from immigration and there would no longer be a need to do border runs than.

Don't work without a WP, it is a criminal offense and schools some times do get raided.

Ok, thanks for that. I will look into this further with the school.

Just have them contact the labour office. They need to contact them probably anyway to get the proper forms and even if you would need a new visa, you would need to apply for the WP first and get wp3 form to show you have applied for it to n embassy/consulate.

Ok, thanks for that. I was aware of the WP3 thing already and have to leave it up to the school to sort all that out for me, but I'm sure you know what Thai schools are like and nothing ever gets done unless you do it yourself.

It turns out that I do have to go and get a new non immigrant B visa. My non im B visa now should have been stopped the moment my contract finished with my old school. It sucks but they are the rules in Thailand.

A teacher at my school told me. He had exactly the same situation, and when he went to apply for his work permit with a non IM B visa from his old school they wanted to fine him 500 baht for everyday he stayed on that B visa and had a contract with the new school.

Someone from my office at the school is going to immigration today to check, but she is adamant that she is correct and that I must go and get a new Non Im B visa.

I appreciate your replies and I'm still not sure who is correct yet, but I certainly hope you are right.

Who told you that? Immigration or labor?

They are wrong.
