March 1, 201115 yr All of this assumes that the helmets in Thailand are any use at all, except for avoiding fines You don't have to wear the ridiculous mini-helmets that are provided by rental shops and with a motorbike purchase, you can buy a decent helmet that will improve your odds if your head hits the pavement. I bought the best locally made helmet I could find 1600B. But still its not very strong on the temple which is the thinnest part of the skull (i think). But most people wear something far inferior
