My Thai wife and three Thai friends are planning to visit Europe in early May. They will first fly to Zurich for a few days then travel to Milan, then on to Paris and end up taking the train to London where they will stay about a week before flying back to Bangkok. I assume they should first get the visa for Swiss, which will grant them entry to Italy and France, then after they get that visa apply for a visa to the UK? Does this sound right?

Yep you've got it, Schengen Visa for Switzerland, Italy and France, and then a UK Visa. Some people prefer to get the UK one first as it's seemingly more difficult to obtain, it's all a matter of choice.

Sounds like a good trip, hope you enjoy. My girlfriend, and I, encountered a really obnoxious Immigration Officer at Gare du Nord on our way back to the UK from a side trip to Paris, he gave both of us a hard time, took the edge off the trip and it still winds me up.

Only if Switzerland is the Schengen area country in which your wife will spend the most days on this trip according to the itinerary you submit.

There are actuality two bits of advice from consulates on this subject, as I was reminded of recently.

If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your main destination (i.e. where you will spend the longest period of time).

But it also goes onto say:

If you intend to visit several countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country of your first point of entry.

Switzerland isn't a Schengen country but since a while accept Schengen Visa.

A Schengen Visa is valid in all Schnegen Member countries.

For all countries you need ONLY one and issued by Embassy of the first Schengen country you enter.

After you are free to travel as you want.

Switzerland is not a member of the Europan Union but is a member of the Schengen Agreement and delivers Schengen Visa valid in the Schengen Area!

Not true, Switzerland is now a Schengen country. It is not a member of the EU. I am Swiss, so I know what about I am speaking.
