You can't do a SWIFT transfer to a bank in Thailand ? Do they allow SWIFT transfers to other countries ?

I'm not sure, but I think an increasing number of UK banks will only accept SWIFT transfers in person.. which is not easy when you are 6000 miles away.

not via santander no. nigeria too they say,as if lumping the two together.

this was in person at branch, as a bank transfer was my plan b to pay for a TEFL course in thailand after my santander visa debit transaction was also declined as a TRANSFER.

hence me asking for anectodatal usage of pre-paid cards

I use GCEN in the UK mastercard. Much better rates than any other card ive used.

web site gcendotcodotuk use reference 1651-0100 for Thailand

Simply pre-load your First Premier Travel Card

and then use it like a debit card at thousands of shops, restaurants and other outlets or to withdraw money at cashpoints worldwide.

* Competitive exchange rates

* A safe and convenient alternative to cash when spending money overseas

* Top up anytime, even when abroad

* Simply load online

* Designed for holiday makers, travellers or business executives

* Prepaid MasterCard card

* Accepted worldwide wherever you see the MasterCard Acceptance Mark.

It really works. i also use them for transferring to my Bangkok bank free of charge. No withdrawal fees. Makes sense!!!!

Royal Bank of Scotland does SWIFT transfers for me.

They gave me a list of security codes.

I just quote the next one in sequence on a faxed instruction,

or do the request via internet banking.

I have never been to the branch in person

I have the security code method with them. Are you saying that you can do a SWIFT transfer to here using internet banking...don't think that I can. I have banked with them for twenty years and they know me personally.

I made a swift transfer from my Santander account to Thailand yesterday. This was arranged via the internet and the funds were received in LOS in 24 hours.

Most pre-paid cards in thailand (and there are only a few of them) are gift cards which can only be used to purchase stuff at a particular merchant (no PIN), or a cash card for atm cash-out - no purchase. Debit cards do most of the work of pre-paid cards here - although you need to ensure that your bank allows it to be used online; and also sometimes online bookings for hotels and cars behave differently to a credit card because the funds (or a portion of the amount) may be deducted immediately from your account upon booking even though you haven't yet "consumed" the service, and refunds in case they are required may take 30 days.
