The OBD light on a Toyota Sport Rider comes on after a few KM. It drives fine apart from the light being on. Stop and start the car and it is off but comes on again after the same few KM's. Any ideas ? From what I have managed to get out of the Missus it is a problem maybe with the emissions? Been trying to find a site to down load a PDF manual in English but Toyota.Com require you to register and the VIN number is issued outside the USA so it won't let me. Cheers Dunc

Took it to Toyota this morning. The quick service board was empty for the whole of the morning only showing jobs booked in on the afternoon. Showed one of the mechanics the light and explained the symptoms etc. Told they would need to book the car in and require it for the whole day. <deleted> !!!!! :o Wasn't the whole idea of computer diagnostic systems to speed things up ? They also couldn't book it in till Wednesday.

I can't say I have been impressed with Samui Toyota the few times I've needed to go there. A parts department that has no wiper blades, headlight bulb or rear light bulb :o

Took it to the local tune up garage down the road and they took a quick look. They informed me after 2 minutes that the engine diagnostic computer was getting high carbon / CO2 readings as the injectors were dirty. Treatment was throwing a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank and filling it with diesel. Took all of 5 minutes. Oh and they didn't charge me a satang for their troubles :D

I hope you gave them something aside anyways for their troubles as they are business people not a charity  .. So has the light gone out or did they just reboot it, assuming they did an ECU diagnostic...

If they are just supposing it was an increase in emissions and didn't verify through the ECU then just reset your warning light you may eventually be in for a disappointment  ..

They stuck a sniffer up the exhaust to check the CO2 levels. He said the light will go off after about half a tank after the cleaner additive has taken effect. I did offer him some money but he wouldn't take it. Very nice man he was ;)

Also, splash out the 2-3 hundred baht for a new air filter, that will most likely fix your problem before the fuel treatment does. You'll notice an immediate improvement in overall performance as well. More so if you haven't regularly changed it. Its is so often forgotten or neglected. Thais tend to blow them clean with compressed air instead of replacing them. There's only so many time ya can get away with that.

Hi,

Bad that Toyota didn't explain what they need to do to repair your car, the ODB just indicate a DTC which can mean everything from a simple air leakage to replace engine / transmision. The outside garage is in many cases destroys the cars instead, they dont have competence or special tools that needed for repair the car. The statement from outside garage that injectors was dirty is nothing else than a best guess and not based on facts.

Have a nice day!

PS. The only job I will let a outside garage to do is change tires.

It must have been sheer coincidence and my good luck then that at exactly half a tank of fuel being used the OBD light went off just as the guy told me it would :o

Or maybe he is the lucky one ?

I must be the luckiest guy in Samui then as Toyota wanted to have my car all day and charge me a fortune for what this garage did for free apart from the cost of the fuel additive. ;)

Believe me most of my family back home is in the motor trade so I know a little about garages and when they are guessing ;)
