Poll: Public wants to see Chalerm lead censure debate

By Sodchuen Limkriangkrai

BANGKOK, 6 March 2011 (NNT) - According to Suan Dusit Poll the public wants Pheu Thai MPs Chairperson Chalerm Yubamrung to lead the censure debate and also wants the upcoming censure debate to cover the high prices of goods.

Suan Dusit Poll of Rajabhat Suan Dusit University conducted a survey of public opinion over subjects to be covered by the censure debate. 23 percent of the respondents said they wanted the censure debate to cover the high prices of essential goods such as fuel, vegetable oil, eggs and sugar, followed by 22 percent on corruption, 20 percent on the government's handling of economic issues, 19 percent on the crackdowns on red-shirt protesters in April-May last year, and 17 percent on drugs, vices and influential persons.

56.8 percent of the respondents agreed with the Opposition for filing the censure motion, saying that the debate would give the government the opportunity to explain various accusations against it which includes corruption, government’s management and other matters.

51.44 percent of the respondents wanted Pheu Thai MPs Chairperson Chalerm Yubamrung to lead the debate, followed by Jatuporn Prompan at 26 percent, and Mingkwan Sangsuwan 22 percent.

Interesting that people wanted chairman for censure debate only a person(s) from opposition. Between the lines, that can tell how many of Thais believe to ruling party and their coalition.

A misunderstanding on your part I think. The chairman is k. Chai as usual (it's his function in parliament). What people like is k. Chalerm to lead the censure debate for PTP, the opposition. Can't blame them, k. Mingkwan (PTP MP, selected by the opposition to lead) is not really an inspiring speaker where as k. Chalerm is always good for fireworks and some fun.

But would a member of the governing-coalition be willing to lead a censure debate on his own government ? Hardly.

What the poll shows is that Mingkwan isn't the preferred PTP-politician, Chalerm is.

Anyway the Speaker of the House will surely be chairing the event ? B)

I suspect that this preference for Chalerm is based more on his entertainment value, rather than on any political support.

Certainly Preference # 2 Jatuporn falls into that category. He's great for cartoon-ishly spewing venom in Parliament.

It'll be interesting, however, to see if Jatuporn is impeached before Thaksin-Sanctioned Censure Debate Leader Mingkwan gets his first bit in.

Excuse me, in case you missed it....

MingKwan is personally approved by Tuxsin, while Dr. Chalerm was licking his wound, presumably because Tuxsin, the true OWNER of the PTP, refused to endorse him to lead PTP.... B)

Do you know if MingKwan and/or family members have any family relationships with Tuxsin...? :ermm:

You beat me to it.

Absolutely true.

It's like watch Thai soaps.

Any chance of this 'pot calling the kettle black' type session resulting in a punch up?

Poll result also depends on how the questions were framed.
