Slain Pakistani cleric, son laid to rest

KARACHI (BNO NEWS) -- A prominent Pakistani religious leader and his son were laid to rest on Sunday after being killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday in New Karachi area of the city, Dawn Television reported.

Police said Maulana Ahmed Madani and his son were gunned down when two unknown armed men riding a motorbike intercepted his vehicle and opened fire.

Maulana Madani, a prominent cleric, is half-brother of the slain Pakistan leader Maulana Azam Tariq who was head of Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, a Deobandi organization that currently operates under newly adopted name of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ). A large number of supporters of the group and students of various religious seminaries attended the funeral.

Speaking to people at the funeral, ASWJ Karachi president Maulana Aurengzeb Farooqi said that dozens of their workers had been killed in different attacks in the city last year, but the government remained insensitive to the killings. He announced a countrywide protest on March 11 against the killings.

Maulana Madani had survived an attack in 2005 in which his elder son was killed.
