The "sense of entitlement" seems to be in expecting free toilets when you are not a customer.

Amazing that people will complain about things like having to pay for a bathroom when they aren't spending money ..... I thought when I opened this it would be a place charging people who were currently customers to use the bathroom (which would be a bit outrageous...)

Am I wrong to feel like I am good enough for them to accept my cash and tips, but not good enough to use their toilet on a night that I am not buying drinks.

Had you been spending $ or tipping you rightly wouldn't have been charged.

Therefore according to your hypothesis professor,

had I been there the previous evening or so paying and tipping but not on the occasion I popped in looking for friends, and took the opportunity to use the toilet, I was not entitled to exit without paying 20 baht.

Perhaps I am just missing something as I do not live in the world of bar/ go go girls.

Or perhaps in not living in that world I am missing very little.

I spend money at thai bus stations, on tickets and restaurants, yet I don't have any qualms about the toilet fee.

Hmmm "professor" ... I didn't mention gogo bars :) I understand that you might feel the need for a disclaimer though :)

Yes, if you are not regular enough to be known by the employees, then you just aren't entitled to a free toilet. I am glad you don't feel the need to complain about public toilets that charge 2-5 Baht, because frankly I just don't think I could take a thread about someone that cheap without telling them what a piece of work they were ;)

I am thinking that she probably did not recognize you, and just saw you come in from the street and go to the bathroom.

That was my guess too.

Maybe but after the guy explained that he was a regular -and tipping- customer, what's wrong with the girl not being gracious and waiving the fee. I mean really, does it cost the bar 20 baht in water charges?

Just an ill mannered employee showing her authority.

It might be that she thought he was lying.

When you deal with the public on a regular basis. it soon become obvious that a lot of people would.

Mr. Barrister, the calendars must be very empty to have amassed nearly 14,000 posts on these boards. Relax, I was not implying you have anything to do with go go bars or all the law students/interns that must moon-lite in those places to pay tuition. Thanks to wisdom gained from your responses, I believe these girls must be budding lawyers as they are quite adept at getting our money and familiar with toilet law.

Quotes:

Owner is quite a nice guy.

Do they have the IQ to realize that humiliating a customer will not improve business?

Since you know the owner why not have a brief conversation with him about your experience? Perhaps he can tell you if this is a change in policy, or merely a one-off occurence. He also might appreciate the opportunity to address your issues and concerns before you go public?

Venting. Sure it may have been one girls attempt to get a fast 20 baht. I don't deny this. And yes, the owner is a nice guy, a polite guy, and seems intelligent. If I do indeed muster up the heart to return there and communicate with the owner, I will perhaps comment here, hopefully in a positive way.

The place did not have a toilet attendant.

On a side not, I have been yelled at by a toilet attendant at a place near pat pong. That was after the second whizz I took (was sitting at a table listening to the band/ a paying and tipping customer) My crime, to turn to water faucet on myself and not use the folded toilet paper to dry my hands. That time I spoke to the manager. She said don't let him bother you. In predominantly farang oriented establishments I have perceived money grabbing aggressiveness even being rude not infrequently. I have not seen this behavior at places that serve both local and international customers; ie; Tawandaeng Pub.

One example; a friend of mine from north thailand, an english speaking nurse with rather white skin wanted to see a pat pong go go bar. We went together, paid the check. The server that brought us the change put her hand over the tray as to block us from the change due. Our intent was to leave a tip, At that point my thai nurse friend spoke to this woman in her native language. "what are you doing" The go go server was shocked and embarrassed, immediately apologized and walked away. I believe the server thought my female friend was asian from another country, and that I was also a tourist. The thaia nurse was amazed, told me she'd never before had a server do that.

Wow, far more information than I was expecting.

You do seem to have a lot "toilet issues", and perhaps as few other issues as well.

:) Not a "Barrister" either ... but you still seem to be focussed on gogos!

Far from it, rather than fitting in, it is patently obvious that you would lead the pack.

Seriously, it is amazing how many toilet problems you've encountered in Thailand. I'm sure it has nothing to do with you. :whistling:

back the 1st time when I was in thailand,it was nothing to see someone peeing on the side of the road.It was an every day occurance

What do you mean "back the 1st time", was that yesterday? Nothing has changed, men still pee anywhere that suits them.

At the door a girl adamantly demanding 20 baht "toilet not free".

Did she work for the bar, or was she a "freelance" lavatory attendant? ;)

I'm beginning to think it is me, and nothing to do with agressive and sophisticated toilet maître d's and the likes pretty much exclusively in places that look for expat business, however those with live music. Interesting how I never had a problem in europe, south america, central america, usa or canada.

As said, the bar has problems with new (street) bars outside selling cheap beer.

These street bars do not have a toilet, so many of the customers try to use the toilet in Country Road without purchasing anything.

I think it is only fair that they have a "toilet charge"

You may have been in there paying and tipping the night before and i see your point, but i bet there are many people that go in and do not buy anything and have a story to tell...

I understand your point. I have eaten at nana hotel restaurant also, many times, and i see their notice about customers only and also use that toilet on occasion. never been hassled and seems the staff would likely not deem it worthwhile to try to shake me down for a few baht.

Standard toilet fee are 3-5 baht range and spelled/writen out clearly.

Again, some may disagree, nastily arrogantly demanding insisting to extract 20 baht ( 6 visits to Morchit bus station toilet) is ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (please fill in the blanks)

I am not the smartest person in the world, however it seems there exist some staff at places like beer bars, that are deficient if basic logic , reasoning, tact. otto line, every westerner is a customer or potential customer, with exception of crazies and drunks that are frequent fliers at a given locale.

Still a a common occurance with Bangkok Taxi drivers. Saw one try and pee in front of the Chinese Embassy in Ratchada Road; the security shooed him off to non Embassy frontage.

20baht is a Farang price; some parts of Thailand you can still get a plate of rice meal for that!

This wouldn't have happened in Gullivers. I know the owner as well & he IS a great guy.

Walk in...use the free internet for 15 mins...walk out. Great guy great value!

Cheers!! :D

Oh forgot to mention...avoid the pool sharks...and have a nice day. :)

On a side note, I have popped into mainstream upscale Thai pubs for the express purpose of using the toilet and never been hassled. There is an element to perceiving westerners as quick cash at some venues.

I think that's rude. If you have the urge to tinkle at inopportune moments or feel yourself frequently caught short, have you been checked for diabetes?

Invest in one of these!

Will save you the unpleasantness of any unexpected 20B fines.

Will make you a superman independent of all toilet facilities in whatever environment you find yourself in.

Will prevent you wearing shorts, therefore a boon for all mankind as well!

Yep. The luxury of being a Thai guy.
