Atkins - What To Order In Restaurants (Low Sugar And Starch)

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I will be in Phuket for 6 days and Bangkok for 3 and I am on the Atkins Diet. I am very concerned that it will be difficult to avoid sugar and starches. From what I hear, even if I do meat dishes there is sugar added in the sauces.

Do you have any suggestions for me in terms of what to order when eating out? I will be with my family so we will be eating out at restauraunts most likely for every meal.

Thank you!

It will be tough, but order protein (chicken, fish, meat) that is broiled or boiled and plain vegetables.

I have to avoid starches and sugar for medical reasons and get along with stuff like beef in oyster sauce - chicken and cashew nuts - stir fries are usually pretty good. Fish is ok. Avoid rice and noodles. Contrary to what the locals think you won't die if you don't eat rice

Isaan food would be one option - laap, nam tok, grilled pork, grilled chicken. Just skip the sticky rice and kanom jin. Oh, and ask for the food not too spicy since you won't have the rice to reduce the heat.

Have someone translate a card for you saying that..

Don't put sugar.

I say it all the time.

While you are at it also Mai sai Pong chu rote

is good too. Don't put MSG.

Plenty of things to eat. Thai Omlettes are good too. Deep friend :) but you can get them plain or with something inside them.

Endure- good to know you do OK with oyster sauce. I have heard people not doing so well with it.

Coconut cream based curries will always contain sugar.

Baked spinach with cheese also includes white sauce, which is made with flour.

Kapow also usually includes a little sugar.

Depending upon which phase of the Atkins diet one is on, they might not be suitable.

That jogged my memory. I recall from my low-carb days many years ago that just about any Thai dish with hot chilis will contain significant amounts of sugar. Something about the sugar bringing out the "heat" of the chili.

Also, pad thai is often made with spoonfuls of sugar.
