Turned the home office upside down but can't find my son's original Thai birth certificate. I do have a colour copy of it and the translation.

Will this be sufficient for getting a replacement? I guess this can be done at the Amphur that issued the original?

He already has his Thai and UK pasports so just needing an original for filing (and not losing!) for future needs.

You should go to the amphur where the birth certificate was originally issued to get a new one. You will need a police report that the original is lost and the amphur should technically only give you one if you have custody (registered marriage or otherwise legitimized) but I think you can get one anyway if you have an old copy and the childs Thai passport, original and copy of your own passport of course.

Cheers Mikey. I reckon the police report will be the biggest item as it's lost and not stolen! The lad is the fruit of my loins and the marriage is well and truly 'amphured' so hopefully just a formality.

Since he is being registered for pre-school, I hope that the school accepts the copy. That will give more time to get a replacement or even find the original.

It's OK to make a police report about a lost birth certificate, just say that it is missing, you do not know if it is stolen or lost. No problems at all for you to get a new BC if you're legally married and have the report. The officer could even make one without the police report if she's in a good mood, can never tell :)

School should have no problems accepting the copy, bring copy of marriage certificate if the mother doesn't come along (to prove that you have shared custody)
