30,000 UDD supporters expected on 12 Mar rally

BANGKOK, 11 March 2011 (NNT) – The Center for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) has expected that about 30,000 supporters would show up in the upcoming mass gathering of the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD).

CAPO and National Police Spokesperson Police Major General Prawut Thavornsiri admitted that the CAPO is worrying over the upcoming mass rally since scores of UDD supporters are anticipated to join in the demonstration on 12 March 2011.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau, therefore, has been tasked with negotiating with UDD key leaders on the setting up of police checkpoints around the protest areas in order to prevent ill-intentioned people from bringing weapons into the rally site in a bid to trigger violence.

The UDD has already confirmed that all seven recently released UDD key leaders will speak on stage on 12 March while ex-Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will be making a video-link talk with his supporters.

On behalf of the CAPO, the spokesperson has advised the UDD co-leaders that they should speak appropriately and avoid breaching bail conditions prescribed by the court; otherwise, their bails could be withdrawn.

Police in charge of Saturday's red rally: Udomdej

By The Nation

Crowds at Saturday's red rally will surge but police should be able to keep peace without the military's backup, First Army Area commander Lt General Udomdej Sitabutr on Friday.

"The security authorities will closely monitor the rally and there is no request for the military involvement in crowd control operations," he said.

Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha did not issue any additional instructions to beef up security followking his yesterday's meeting with the prime minister, Udomdej said.

In a contingeny plan, Army troops deployed in the capital have been placed on alert for the past few days.

Key military units include First Infantry Division, First Regiment of the Royal Guards, Eleveth Infantry Regiment, Fourth Cavalry Battalion and Military Police Battalion.

The Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order has estimated some 30,000 red shirts to show up at the rally. Police have warned organisers to end the rally before Tuesday, the start of the censure debate. But the red shirts plan to rally until next Saturday, coinciding with the vote on the no-confidence motion.

There's apparently no plan for a sustained rally. It'll end at 1am on Sunday. The prolonged rally thing is just a rumour.

Does anybody know where it will be, please?

the main body of the group will be assembling inside the phone box at the corner of Silom Road

any overspill of Red supporters will be accommodated in the McDonald's nearby, where the leaders will entertain questions from the media in booth #4, in the far corner.

widening work has been carried out on the doors of the restaurant just in case Arisaman shows up

advance questions by the press commission have been forwarded for the approval of the red leaders

one question from the leaked document asked 'what's your main policy for the next election?''

off the record an unnamed red source said '' we don't have any real policy, we will just bring Thaksin back, he will sort something out''

Here we go again! Get the huddled masses out of the dried out rice fields and onto the streets of Bangkok! Dust off the old foot clappers and blare the songs for life! Don't forget a big picture in the front of the golden boy, that makes it respectable! :)

not a big percentage willing to support the minority reds then ............

I would disagree, local meetings up here in the NE are drawing substantial crowds...and they are not being paid. The BKK rallys are a publicity thing but the real discussions are taking place in their villages and towns but you will not read about that in your newspaper. As farangs we dont get to know what the thais are thinking and doing and only when pressing a friend he leaked out how many meetings are actually taking place across this region. Even my wife is reluctant to discuss anything red with her husband.

For want of a better phrase the 'movement' is alive and well and stronger than before and that is not about violence, its about the desire to change. Minority reds.. lost for words

You may need to get this idea out of your bonce that this is just about oiks from the farm. There is serious money being ploughed into this, the poor are just the foot soldiers. Dont want to get in a rant about using the poor but during the protests at Rachaprasong there was a rally being held in Khon Kaen at the same time. Every so often a cavalcade of cars would set off around the city. In that cavalcade would be a few foreign imported cars (with thaksin flags hanging out the window) that must have cost over 20,000,000 baht. Wealthy people here want a change. Businessmen gave up their premises and fed and watered the hoardes.

Many posters need to question the media that is available to them, stop making Thaksin the issue...there is many more, not quite as wealthy as Thaksin, with money who want there turn at the trough... and the majority of reds see these people as the only option for a change in their down trodden lifestyle. Not to say they will get much, if PT get to power but if they dont PT wont get back in power.

How many corrupt billions are hiding in the private bank accounts of corrupt officials that could be be frozen, taken back thaksin style and filtered to the poor. There is wealth in this country, the greedy b4st4rds need to start sharing it for the good of all... rant over....for now

Polling shows the political party of the reds trail the Thai democratic party, so yes, the reds are by definition a minority. It's one thing to favor popular people's pro democracy revolutions, but it gets sticky when you are talking about a minority, and as others have pointed out before, rather a proxy "war" between different sets of elites.

''their down trodden lifestyle.'''

i have seen the down trodden lifestyle in the poor rural areas

new pickups, new motorbikes, big screen TV's, everyone has a mobile phone, lots of eating out, busy markets, and decent housing

hardly the image you try to convey........

Communism, in it's traditional form, was in fact defeated, rather than just not working. For something to be described as 'not working' it has to be left alone. The western powers fought against it from it's inception. I'm not saying that was a bad thing or otherwise, just that that's what happened. :)

Anyway, a fairer distribution of land and wealth/power does not necessarily equate to communism.

There are many societies that have less imbalance than Thailand, that are not communist by any stretch of the imagination.

''How many corrupt billions are hiding in the private bank accounts of corrupt officials that could be be frozen, taken back thaksin style and filtered to the poor''

how much money would there be in the public coffers if the government was not having to deal with the ramifications of the attempted red revolution

how many hospitals, schools and roads have been built if they did not have to pay out to repel this revolutionary attempt at a civil war ?

how much was paid out in compensation to the families of the dead and injured by the government for breaking the law and by being there at all

i would not have rewarded them with one satang

how much money was paid out to businesses and families in Bangkok that were affected by their illegal actions?

how much money was lost by Thailand in tourism?

how many universities would that money alone have built in the ''poor rural north''

in my opinion these Red revolutionaries would be better off considering Thailand as a whole and not just their selfish needs to get their place at the trough

bully boy tactics, intimidation and accepting payment for your votes does not help Thailand develop

obey the law, use your vote wisely and let the party that wins get on with it

i expect that won't be acceptable to the reds though............

Funny thing --- one poster tells about the wealth and power behind the red movement and warns us that we shouldn't count Thaksin out ... AND then tells us tthis isn't about one group of elite trying for their turn at the trough, battling another set of elite.

Hint ..... if you have to push people into telling you about "the movement" and even your wife won't talk to you about it, perhaps they are practicing grengjai and trying not to upset you. When finally pushed into it they then tell you what you want to hear makes that pretty clear. Large scale 'movements" are thoroughly infiltrated on both sides (red and yellow) by people from every side (red, yellow, govt. and army). The only privacy in groups like those are at the top levels and at the direct action levels and they have the possibility of having traitors in their midst as well.

30k protesters just isn't that big of a number .. particularly since the growing season is over and the rent-a-mob price will have gone down compared to a month or two ago.

They are probably part of SHINAWATRA’S BUSINESS NETWORK. If Pheu Thai and Thaksin return to power there will be stronger growth in profits for them. It has nothing to do with democracy for the ordinary people.

After reading the above part and still remembering the post of truethailand before where he said

"I would disagree, local meetings up here in the NE are drawing substantial crowds...and they are not being paid."

I'm really wondering about the value of what dear member 'truethailand' writes. I mean we talk about reply #14 and #15, about 19 minutes apart. There may be value to it, but I'm afraid it does need some solid explanation :ermm:

I don't think anyone is suggesting that the Democrats are going to make much headway in the NE, but that is less than a third of the country. The BJT have beaten the PTP in recent by-elections, and there were many seats that the PPP won in the last election with way less than a majority of the votes (needing to only get the largest number of votes to win). The Dems have not had any backlash in by-elections, so it's likely that they will better than the last election, and with defections from the PTP and the BJT eating away at there support in some areas, it's unlikely that there will be a good result for the PTP.

maybe they did that in an effort to placate them so that the ''hoardes'' would not burn down their businesses
