Here's a good overall recap and update from AP:

Hundreds killed in tsunami after 8.9 Japan quake

March 11, 2011, 10:27 a.m. EST Associated Press TOKYO (AP) — A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing hundreds of people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control.

Hours later, the tsunami hit Hawaii and warnings blanketed the Pacific, putting areas on alert as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast. In Japan, the area around a nuclear power plant in the northeast was evacuated after the reactor's cooling system failed.

Police said 200 to 300 bodies were found in the northeastern coastal city of Sendai, the city in Miyagi prefecture (state) closest to the quake's epicenter. Another 110 were confirmed killed, with 350 people missing. Police also said 544 people were injured.

The magnitude-8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (seven-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0. (continued...)

One early estimate in the article of the damage: U.S. $10 billion

And for historical context:

Japan's worst previous quake was in 1923 in Kanto, an 8.3-magnitude temblor that killed 143,000 people, according to USGS. A 7.2-magnitude quake in Kobe city in 1996 killed 6,400 people.

And an AP update on the waves in Hawaii:

Tsunami waves sweep Hawaii, no major damage yet

March 11, 2011, 10:25 a.m. EST Associated Press HONOLULU (AP) — Tsunami waves swamped Hawaii beaches before dawn Friday but didn't cause any major damage after devastating an earthquake-ravaged Japan and sparking evacuations as far away as the U.S. western coast.

Kauai was the first of the Hawaiian islands hit by the tsunami, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. Water rushed ashore in Honolulu, swamping the beach in Waikiki and surging over a break wall in the world-famous resort but stopping short of the area's high-rise hotels.

Waves about 7 feet high were recorded on Maui, and 3 feet in Oahu and Kauai. Officials warned that the waves would continue and could become larger, but a scientist at the tsunami warning center said it didn't appear that they would cause major damage in Hawaii.

"But there is going to be some damage, I'm sure," said geophysicist Gerard Fryer in Hawaii. (continued...)

Tsunami warnings lifted in Philippines

Well then that indicates also an all clear for southern Thailand. A bit worrying that the after shocks were getting south of Tokyo and potentially sending waves down the narrow alley from there to Malaysia.

Whew!

Now back to worrying about the nuclear plants potential meltdowns, and ignoring Charlie Sheen's ongoing meltdown.

Reuters recap on Japan's nuclear power situation, about half of their generating capacity is down either due to the earthquake and/or planned outages.. It seems some of the reactors at Fukushima were already down for planned service.

Fri Mar 11, 2011 12:14pm EST

March 12 (Reuters) - The table below shows the latest operational status of Japan's nuclear power plants after a strong earthquake on Friday, according to a Reuters survey.

A total of 11 reactors at four plants operated by three firms have shut down automatically after the earthquake, leaving 25,622 megawatts of nuclear power generation capacity, or 52.3

percent of Japan's total, in operation, Reuters calculations show.

Japan's nine utilities and one wholesaler have 54 nuclear power generators for commercial use, with a total generating capacity of 48,960 megawatts.

In the table below, capacities are shown in megawatts. "P" represents a planned regular

inspection shutdown and "U" an unplanned shutdown, including those on Friday due to the

earthquake.

Company name Plant name Unit MW Current status

Tokyo Electric Power Fukushima-Daiichi

1 460 U from Mar. 11, 2011

2 784 U from Mar. 11, 2011

3 784 U from Mar. 11, 2011

4 784 P from Nov. 30, 2010

5 784 P from Jan 3, 2011
